AH-OOGA!! AH-OOGA!! GEEZER ALERT!! GEEZER ALERT!! AH-OOGA!! AH-OOGA!!
So the other night, I'm channel-surfing and land on a show where a tall gentleman is cranking the classic Bo Diddley beat on a hollow-body Gibson. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out that this is Mr. George Thorogood and his Destroyers. The music is classic stuff, so I put the clicker down and settled in for a listen. Unfortunately, he's been playing the same 10 songs for the past 30 years, and even the solos didn't seem very original. Even worse, the channel was PBS and the venue was Wilmington (Delaware) Grand Opera House. (Wait, what?!? The Opera House?!?) At one point, they cut to a shot from the back of the hall, and I noticed a lukewarm reception, as only about half the crowd was on their feet and moving during "Bad to the Bone". Mrs. Turk commented, "The other half probably had their knees replaced and don't like standing any more."
It was a far cry from the glory days of yore, when as an underage Turk, I saw Lonesome George in my old hometown, in a dark dive called the Decade ("at the corner of Rock and Roll"), and then few years later as a freshly employed Turk, when I caught a show at the Bayou in Georgetown. Both of us were a lot skinnier then and could yowl at the moon until the wee hours of the morning...
I'm looking forward to tomorrow night, when PBS does re-runs of "The Lawrence Welk Show". I think that might be more my speed these days....

Re: LTE 2.0
I loved watching Welk with my grandmother when I was a kid when I'd visit her in the summer. Fun times. We watched Welk, Tic Tac Dough, Jeopardy, Wheel of Fortune (Vanna pre surgery and the actual wheel of fortune out there where contestants spent earnings on furniture and stuff), Jokers Wild, Price is Right (have your pets spayed or neuetered!), As The World Turns, and Young & the Restless. Ah, the good old days.Turk wrote: I'm looking forward to tomorrow night, when PBS does re-runs of "The Lawrence Welk Show". I think that might be more my speed these days....
