I have a jury trial in 2 weeks (8 year old repeatedly molested by aunt's boyfriend), and am going to work on it from the comfort of my couch, where PHB can't decide at a moment's notice that he can waste an hour and a half of our time trying to explain how a computer program he doesn't understand and can't use will help us, somehow.

Defendant won't take a plea? I know his attorney is peeved.

I haven't heard back from the defense attorney. I suspect she is rather irritated with him.
PHB dumped this case on me.

when the kid's mother came into the office, I was going to introduce myself. She took one look at me and said, "oh, god, I remember you. You used to put me in jail all the time."
This case ought to be interesting. Sad, but interesting.
Is the juvenile court involved, too?

No, PHB handled the case through the juvenile court. He dumped it on me because the defendant's aunt sent him a birthday card. But he didn't want to tell the family that he was dumping it, so he was planning to tell them he had a bigger case at the same time (how that doesn't sound like dumping, don't ask me) but then decided not to tell them anything.
I don't remember the kid's mama, but I do remember prosecuting her daddy a bunch of times.

good grief...and what is the over under on your sending the kid to jail to one day? Talk about the deck stacked against her...

I would say the poor kid has absolutely no chance in the world. Pity; she's a smart little girl, but I don't see how she will ever rise above her situation.

Who has custody of the little girl? Will she end up right back in the same home setting? I swear I don't know how you guys keep faith in humanity. You have to wade through this scum every day. How do you keep your perspective?

The little girl is living with Mom and (now that he's home from prison) Dad. To be fair, these are some of the more supportive parents I've dealt with in a while.
It's hard to have any faith in humanity, but having good, solid, caring friends helps a great deal.

I sit on the Foster Care Review Board here so when you are done with them...send them to Iowa & we will be sure the little one is properly cared for!

Good morning! (although it's the middle of the night thread to me) Been up over an hour. Just lying there worrying about the day wasn't getting me anywhere. So I rolled out and made a pot of "8th Sin" at DukeUsul's recommendation. He's right. This coffee -Cave Man blend - will get your motor runnin'!
aaahhhhhhhh SEE ya!

Good morning! It is 6:15 AM Central time, but I've been up since a little before 5 AM tending to the kitten. Well, just sitting there reading so she can get used to my presence.
