Turns out the Historical Society is right across the street from the building where we had my senior year fraternity formal...that'll take me back pretty much every morning.
I talk a lot about the "power of place" as a historian, and this neck of the woods has it in spades. I love it.
I think that's one of the most exciting things you can do when you're studying--to immerse yourself fully in your subject. Being there and seeing your subject come alive is so much more interesting than reading about it in a book. Being there certainly augments the experience of reading an original manuscript.

Humanities majors don't have lab classes, but for those of us who are hands-on learners, being in that place enhances the learning experience in much the same way that a lab enhances a chemistry major's education.

As a religion major, my summer in Israel turbo-charged my education. I wasn't just reading about these ancient places, I was experiencing them.

I hope that being in Charleston turbo-charges the researching, writing and defense of your dissertation.

Um, I actually find your research very interesting, but I've been constantly disappointed by checking in on this thread. I have yet to see a picture of a bikini clad beauty. So, when are we gonna get to see item #2? :-w

If you really want to immerse yourself in the history, I think you need to wear wool. All the time. I don't know what else could make you feel closer to those people than to wear wool in Charleston in the dead of summer.

Um, yeah...no. It's fucking hot here. And steamy. I'm really glad I stocked up on Gold Bond before I came.
Anyway, thoughts from the first day:
1. For the first few days at least, I think I'm going to be characterized largely by a feeling of being overwhelmed at the task before me, with periodic pangs of "Holy shit, I have no fucking clue what I'm doing here" panic. I left the archive about half an hour before it closed today, because a) I was exhausted. Yesterday's travel, the excitement of it all, etc. have tuckered me out, but we are also talking about a lot of difficult, mind-intensive reading. I spent most of the day with original albeit laminated and bound) letters from 1752, written in the period's script and with its ahem, punctuational idiosyncracies (historical revelation of the day: the period was evidently invented sometime in the last 257 years). That said, reading parchment as morning light streams through the wavy glass of a century-plus old building is fucking awesome. Reason b that I left: my head is just kind of swimming with everything (as I've already mentioned). I just kind of needed to decompress & process.
2. That said, there's a ton of good stuff in the archive. I've already hit upon two big letterbooks that will be big parts of my corpus of sources, and will mesh well with the research I had already begun in Atlanta.
3. There's a reallyfuckinggood hot dog cart about 50 yards from the Historical Society, run by a sweet lady named Becky. I may ask her to marry me before the summer's out.
4. This city is crammed with beautiful people of both sexes (especially now that I'm here ;) ). I'm about 96% positive that I saw Heath Ledger's ghost getting into his car about 20 minutes ago.
5. I have been invited to a party for the Charleston School of Law on Shem Creek this evening. For the uninitiated, this is what Shem Creek looks like in the evening:

So, about that...um, yes please.

There are some great restaurants on both side of Shem Creek!

So now that we are at the beginning of the long holiday weekend, are we going to see some pictures of the beach bikini beauties?

No kidding huh? Beautiful photo. I've got a few that I've turned into paintings from those sunsets, you only see colors like that at the beach.

I've got a friend and family in Charleston, but have never visited. Just might have to make an art trip. By the time Wilson's trip and thread ends, I'll be armed with some serious history to better understand what I would be painting.

Archivists are the historians best friend. We'd be lost without them - absolutely lost.

Well, after a delightful 4th of July weekend, Sunday afternoon finds me with computer trouble...Black screen, no start-up to be had from my computer (even though it's on and I can hear it running). This happened upon a restart from otherwise normal functioning, too, so I'm pretty well perplexed. It is of course going to require expert (and thus presumably costly) examination. Rude awakening, terrible timing, general pain in the ass.
The good news is that I can definitely get by in the archive without it for quite a while. I will nevertheless be taking it to be looked at ASAP.

Sounds like a power supply. (Makes little sense since the computer DOES power on, but it's often the culprit.) If ain't, then go buy a new computer. At least you're getting through to us on something.

Don't worry about it - we all feel that way. Heck, most of us feel like complete frauds who are just waiting for the faculty in our departments to realize that we are frauds. But those feelings go away in time. You'll eventually get a handle on the sheer volume of material. It doesn't happen right away, but it does happen.

I left the archive about half an hour before it closed today, because a) I was exhausted.
Archival research is always exhausting. The best thing about the PRO in London was that there was a pub attached to the tube station. People would stream out of the archives and into the pub at the end of each day. It got even better when I ran into an old prof of mine who insisted on buying drinks for me every night after the research was done. Do yourself a huge favour and, when you leave the archives, head straight to the nearest bar to have a couple of drinks and decompress.

My computer is back in action! I had to download some software driver update or something; I honestly dunno. But I am shocked by the responsiveness, effectiveness, and free-ness of the customer service I got just by dialing the 800 number.
I'm hanging out with a friend right now, but a big, long update later this evening.
