AD, this is very good news!
I'm keeping my fingers crossed for you.

Thanksgiving week wasn't doable, so my interview will be the first week of December. Looks like I will have to tell PHB that I have a job interview. I didn't want to do that, which is why I really liked the idea of having the interview just before Thanksgiving.

Why can't you just ask for some holiday time? You know, baking, shopping, family-ing...

Agreed, why does PHB need to know why you are taking time off?
P.S. I'll confess I haven't read the rest of the thread since my banning from the site by my ISP.

And that's why you want the time off, IF you even need to give the asshole a reason. I'd leave him guessing.

An interview need not be mentioned. A health or family issue would make more sense. PHB should not know squat about the job process, until you have landed and accepted one.
Just my 2 cents.

It's none of PHB business why you want time off. It's your time. Some PHB are way out of line to expect to know the reason why an employee wants time off. If it were we, I would say "it's personal". Good Luck AD.

I guess JoPa is going to start posting in this thread now... I don't think he'll find anyone who will hire him though.

Sad but true. I've always thought he was one of the good guys. It's really sad to see his legacy tainted by the thoroughly despicable actions of an assistant - but then, it sounds like JoePa didn't report what he knew to the proper authorities. Horrible, horrible situation.

Never ever mention you are looking for another job. Ever. Not Ever. 'Personal' and 'Family' are the only words you need. Period. When my people have time off the only thing I want to know is 'reachable or not' in the event the excrement strikes the oscillating wind shifting unit. Beyond that, it is none of my business what they do with their personal time.

There's also the temptation in academic circles to suggest you are giving an invited talk at XYZ University.
I would avoid that temptation. Don't give PHB ANY clue.
Stick to PERSONAL or FAMILY.

I think you all should collaborate on a book: The Job Search Book.
There is a lot of good information in this thread.

Proving yet again that connections matter, I recieved a call today from the person at UT-Southwestern at Dallas. He mentioned specifically that my friend had told him about me. He wants to talk with me about the job and about my expectations. I called back and left a message; we'll be talking next week.
All of my promising job leads have been due to the efforts of this particular friend. She rocks!
