Escalators - did you once fear them?

Be honest. As a child, did you kind of fear escalators?

I had some periods of fear, but not too much, or I got over it quick.

But if I had heard this story as a kid, I would have had a total freakout.

I never did, but my wife did. It's because her shoelaces got caught in one when she was three, and her dad had to pull her out of the shoe and let the shoe get "eaten" before her eyes. I would think anybody would be afraid of them after witnessing that as a little kid.

I still don't like them...but only down escalators. I got jostled from behind when I was kid in Madison Square Garden as I was stepping on the down escalator and fell forward - the people several steps down stopped my downward ascent but it scared the crap out of me. I still dislike the First Step onto a down escalator - one I'm on, I'm fine - UP doesn't bother me at all - and I have run up the down more than once

I <3 escalators. Always have. Sometimes, I even try to go the opposite direction on an escalator. But not when people are around.

This analogy has been used for years when people say they are afraid of, or against, nuclear power. Think Hiroshima and Nagasaki vs. nuclear power plant.

I still love escalators. I always hated in DC (and I'm assuming elsewhere) that they put the nobs between the rails to discourage sliding down them. Always looked like it would be a fun ride.

Instead of stepping off, I used to like to lift my toes up at the end and have the escalator slide me onto the solid ground. The shoes* I was wearing had soft rubber soles, and the escalator "comb" caught and shredded the heel of my right shoe. Since then, I step off the escalator like normal people.

I, too, had a pair of Earth Shoes. They were ugly, but they were the fashion at the time.

In the 70's they weren't so expensive. My parents had better things to do with their money than buy their 12 year old expensive shoes (I had three other siblings, too).

The "great thing" about them, allegedly, is that the heel is slightly lower than the toes, which is how your foot is built, so it's better for your feet. Allegedly. I can vouch that they were very comfortable. I didn't get a second pair after the escalator ate mine, though.

I grew up in the sticks of eastern North Carolina. We didn't have escalators in our little towns. (Our towns were so small that we didn't even have traffic lights.)

When we would go to Richmond to see my great aunt, she and my mom would always take me shopping. The old Miller & Rhoades and the old Thalhimer's stores in downtown Richmond had escalators. Some of the escalators had small treads and others had thick treads. My aunt always wore high heel shoes, and she and I would play a game called "Will Aunt Marguerite's heels get stuck in this escalator?" It was great fun.

I was always fascinated by the escalator and have got my show stuck a time or more.... but I dreaded the thought of being eaten up by the mechanical monster!!!!

No I am not a geek :geek: :geek: or the former? If the former, isn't that word synonymous with ONLY liking women regardless of gender origin, typically lady on lady (but I like to think out of the box a bit), THUS a man's preference for ONLY LIKING ladies would apply also, NO? (that is the extent of my french "language" abilities .... WEEEE ) Rest assured I am completely hetero and ALL MAN and have eyes for ONLY 1 special lady!!!!
