Brands that still are, but seem like they shouldn't be...

Post by EarlJam » April 20th, 2011, 5:03 pm

You know what I'm talking about. Things your parents and grandparents used that likely still are out there but no longer are household names. A few examples include:

1. Geritol
2. Doans for backaches
3. Brut
4. Nair
5. Elton

Some products, like Old Spice have made amazing comebacks. What other brands that used to be household names have gone the way of the dinosaur but are still available in the supermarket? Could make for some interesting discussion.

I'm curious about Goody Powders. People in the varnish zone swear by the stuff for headaches (last year Goody's Cool Orange sponsored one of the Martinsville Sprint Cup races, and it may have sponsored the last one a few weeks ago), but I'd never even heard of it until I moved out here.

Do the people of CTN nation know/use Goody Powders?

Goody's is fantastic, but perhaps it's best use is for practical jokes at restaurants. Open a pack and pour it on the table. Take out a credit card and begin cutting lines. Enjoy the facial expression of your server!!!

I played "old school" tennis tonight with a spicy serve. AND, I smell like a horse. Does THAT count??

One development I'm seeing that I do NOT like is the disappearance of bar soap. I love bar soap and think it is much more economical than "shower gel" or "body wash." That stuff is basically just shampoo and half of it spills on the bathtub floor. What a marketing ploy. Bar soap rocks! Long live bar soap!

Who's with me!!??

Parents (and grandparents) use Vicks Vapo Rub to help decongest kids noses and chests, just like your parents probably did. I've used it on myself on occasion :D And Noxema is good for sunburned skin - it's very cooling!

Vick's is amazing. My wife uses it every night before bed. We use it on the kids when they're sick. My favorite use is the one I use it for...I learned the tip from watching CSI. If my kids have a mess when they're sick ( :poo: or :puke-huge:), I don't have one lick of nausea cleaning it up as long as smear a good amount of that on my upper lip before I start cleaning up. It's the smell that triggers the gag reflex, and the Vick's takes care of 95% of that. I can USUALLY do it okay without too much trouble unless it's particularly smelly, but with the Vick's I don't even have to worry about it.

That is an old nurse's trick...taught to me by a great aunt ages ago...it really works!

That trick makes an appearance in The Silence of the Lambs too.

Get on over to a local farmer's market and you'll find plenty of great soap. If you can't find a farmer's market:
1. Shame on you
2. Go to somewhere like Earth Fare, the Green Market and they'll also have a great selection of bar soaps.
