Most beautiful hole at Augusta National

Post by throatybeard » April 10th, 2011, 12:46 am

What is the most beautiful hole on the greatest golf course in America? (Apologies to Pebble Beach).

I'm going with Sixteen. The whole thing is nearly a religious experience for me, but Sixteen is the altar so to speak. Funny thing is it was this squat, unremarkable hole in the early days, and then they prettied it up with the lake you now consider essential to its makeup.

Wow, neither EJ nor Colchar made a joke about the guy landing his tee shot in the woman's, um, special place? I'm shocked. Are they growing up? :-o

Wow... I thought for sure one of the options would have been the hole that Tiger bogeys. ;)

Azalea.

I'll go with 12. Simply stunning. Even more so in person. We lived in Augusta for 5 years and I got to walk the course during the par 3 tourney. My wife got to use the ticket I had for the final round in 1981 and found the course breath-taking. She hates golf but considered taking up the sport after spending the day there.

BTW Lavabe, re: Tiger's bogey(s), hole is singular :)) =)) .
[redacted] them and the horses they rode in on.

I join with you for 16. So many remarkable plays have been made here. Also, many that have set up some great finishes for the last two holes. The green is just freakish. Most unique, indeed.

I've been there twice for the Saturday and Sunday rounds - 1993 and 1994 when Langer and Olazabal won. It's the greenest place on earth, although I've never been to Ireland. And the shade of green is literally the greenest I've ever seen.

I've gone with hole #12 as both the most beautiful and the also the scariest, the most difficult and the most treacherous, especially if the wind is blowing.

# 16's green is incredible, with its incredible slope. OK, I've used incredible twice in the same sentence, and probably need to again just to express how incredibly incredible that slope is, especially for today's (Sunday) pin placement. Watch for tee shots hit to the middle of the green that fall towards the hole and (almost) go in for a hole in one! There were two or three of them a few years ago. Of course, if they have too much speed as they go past the hole, they may go into the water... And then there was Tiger's amazing chip shot from behind the green that curved 20 feet and hung on the lip (with the Nike logo showing) for what seemed like a minute before it fell in for birdie (you'll see the replay umpteen times today I'm sure if you watch the broadcast). It's a wonderful hole but not the most beautiful by any means. And to avoid trouble on your tee shot, "just" hit it long and right. Can't do that on #12.
Your paradigm of optimism

Impossible to pick just one so my vote would go to Amen Corner where you can see three of them!

Amen to that!
