Duke Basketball Overseas -- part 11 of a season long series

On Saturday in Australia, but late Friday in the United States, Jess Foley and the Adelaide Lightning had a tough game against the Melbourne Boomers, falling 75-53.  Jess had a quiet night offensively in 28 minutes.  Laura Hodges led the team with 25 points and 7 rebounds.  In the win, Chelsea Poppens, the rookie out of Iowa State, had 23 points.

Kathleen Scheer and the Sydney University Flames were the latest team to pound the West Coast Waves, winning 75-38.  Kathleen had 5 points in 7 minutes.

Krystal Thomas and Perfumerias Avenida and returned to domestic league action and easily handled Bizkaia 70-42.  Krystal had 2 points and 13 rebounds in 18 minutes as she was moved into the starting lineup.  Leonor Rodriguez had 17 points, Marta Fernandez had 14 points, and Angelica Robinson had 11 points and 7 rebounds.  In the loss, ex-Arizona player Ify Ibekwe had 21 points and 12 rebounds.

Mistie Bass and Lyon started to take control of their game with Villeneuve in the second quarter on their way to a 76-58 win and handing their opponents their first loss.  Mistie had 20 points in 29 minutes.  In the loss, ex-West Virginia player Olayinka Sanni had 14 points.

David McClure and Neptunas returned to VTB United League play with a game in Russia at Krasnye Krylia, where they trailed most of the way, losing 79-72.  David returned to action, but had a quiet 5 minutes.  In the win, ex-Syracuse player Demetris Nichols had 18 points and ex-Indiana player Bracey Wright had 16 points.

Daniel Ewing and Paris-Levallois were looking to build some momentum as they needed a win in domestic league play.  Their game at Strasbourg went into overtime before they prevailed 89-88.  Daniel led his team with 19 points in 30 minutes before fouling out.  Maleye Ndoye had 13 points.  Ex-NBA player Alexis Ajinca had 22 points and 13 rebounds in the loss.

On Sunday in South Korea, while it was still late Saturday in the United States, Alana Beard and the Shinhan S-Birds lost a tough game to Woori Bank Hansae 85-79.  Alana had 2 points in 8 minutes as Shekinna Stricklen had 30 points and 9 rebounds.  In the win, ex-Georgia Tech player Sasha Goodlett had 20 points and 7 rebounds.

Chante Black and Umbertide shook off a slow start to beat Umana Venezia 65-57.  Chante had 13 points and 14 rebounds in 31 minutes.  Ashleigh Fontenette had 18 points and 6 rebounds.

It was the first big battle of two former Duke Men's Basketball players in Serbia as DeMarcus Nelson and Red Star Belgrade hosted Nolan Smith and Cedevita Zagreb in a key Adriatic League.  It was DeMarcus and the home team that took the lead in the second quarter and won 73-59.  DeMarcus finished with 12 points and 8 assists in 31 minutes on his way to the game MVP honors as he continues a strong week.  Nolan had 22 points in 34 minutes to keep his team in the game while battling foul trouble.

Shavlik Randolph made his return to China for his second season in a row with Foshan as they look to build on a solid season from a year ago.  In their opener they took on the other team he has played for in China, Dongguan, and opened the season with a 107-97 win.  Shavlik continued the individual statistical brilliance of his last season and had 32 points and 15 rebounds in 36 minutes.  His teammate, ex-Kentucky player Gerald Fitch, added 21 points and 7 rebounds.  In the loss, ex-Cal State Fullerton player Bobby Brown had 32 points and 6 assists and ex-Syracuse player Donte Greene had 20 points and 13 rebounds.

Shelden Williams made his debut in China as well after playing his first overseas season in France.  He is one of the signing that Tianjin made hoping to have a better season.  They started their season well with a solid 97-88 win over Shanxi.  Shelden had 20 points and 13 rebounds in 30 minutes.  His teammate, Sebastian Telfair, who is making his way over to China after the NBA, had 29 points.  In the loss, ex-Southern Miss player Charles Gaines had 24 points and 17 rebounds and ex-Arizona player Marcus Williams had 20 points and 10 rebounds.

Marty Pocius and Zalgiris Kaunas returned to domestic league action and easily defeated LSU-Atletas 79-50.  Marty was only needed for 7 minutes.

On Monday, Monique Currie and the KB Stars beat the Samsung Life Blue Minx 86-69 after a fast start.  Monique had 20 points and 9 rebounds in 26 minutes and Marissa Coleman added 12 points.  In the loss, ex-Tennessee player Ashley Robinson had 14 points and 7 rebounds.

Karima Christmas and Maccabi Ramat Hen beat Hapoel Rishon Lezion 85-61.  Karima had 11 points and 21 rebounds in 36 minutes.  Ashley Shields had 27 points, Toni Young had 12 points and 7 rebounds, and Michal Assaf had 10 points.  In the loss, rookie Toluwani Omotola from Liberty had 17 points and 12 rebounds and rookie Sugar Rodgers from Georgetown had 14 points and 9 rebounds.
