Apple/Mac people- Question for you re: Snow Leopard
So should I preorder the upgrade online @ $29? I'm currently on 10.5.8 (Leopard). I'm not familiar w/ Mac OS upgrades, as this is my first. Thoughts?

Regarding the upgrade: Other than new performance enhancements and increased stability, there aren't many features that might jump out at consumers and wow them with their awesomeness. Understand though, that there are some really cool, under-the-hood upgrades here. Faster Safari, new QuickTime, updated Finder for Snow Leopard and tons of little improvements might be worth the upgrade but I wouldn't be over eager.
Don't think there will be any harm in upgrading either. And if you have troubles, you know who to call.

The mother of my future grandchild posted this last night
I'm hoping it is still under service contract - I think it is. Apple has replaced the mother board twice and the air card three times since she bought it in Dec. 2004 (or was it 2005?), all free under warranty. Any comments?is on Patrick's computer. I think my Mac is on it's last leg. I've got the screen of death three times today. PC next time. Not hating Macs...just too hard to fix if they screw up.

I feel bad for the mother of your future grandchild. It's unfortunate, but understandable, that this would put a bad taste in her mouth for Macs. I'm not sure I'd agree with her regarding the "too hard to fix" statement. One, it's too general. Is she talking about fixing a software problem or a hardware problem? Two, the problems she is having aren't unique to Apple. She runs about the same chance of these problems happening when she buys and ugly grey box. I've taken apart, rebuilt and fixed many a computer in my day and Macs have been, by far the easiest to service, Dell servers aren't too bad either.

Getting it serviced is easy, just take it to the Apple store. The problem is she lives in Banner Elk, so there is no nearby Apple store. On the bright side, she comes home to drop it off at one of the Apple stores in/near Raleigh when it needs service But with her schedule, and her husbands schedule (being a HS band director severely limits your free weekends in the fall...), time for a trip here doesn't really exist any time soon. When I was an Apple Authorized Service Provider, they had a drop-ship program where they would mail an empty box to customers so they could return the hardware free of cost if it was under warranty. She might try asking if they still offer that.
