RIP Dean Smith

Post by ArkieDukie » February 8th, 2015, 9:22 am

Just saw that Dean Smith has passed. While I don't like his shade of blue, I can respect what he brought to the game of college basketball. May he rest in peace.

Loved to hate him, especially since he made it so easy. It always amazes me that as fans we've been so fortunate to be so close to two giants of the game. RIP, thanks for your contributions.

Bingo! I knew that would give it away, Bob!

I was keeping Native that day and took him over to the Country Club at lunchtime. Smith and Guthridge were at the next table where they often sat for lunch. You won't believe what I had the gall to do next. I said "Coach, this baby's father is named after you (true) and I know he would love to have him in a picture with you. Would you hold him for me while I run home for my camera?" And to my amazement, he agreed and I guess he ate his lunch with one hand until I got back and found them still snuggled together.

Amid all the aggravation Smith gave me as a Duke fan, this remains a very soft spot for him in my heart. It was so very nice of him to accommodate me.
Love, Ima

PS I have another one somewhere where the baby is looking straight up Smith's nose. It's pretty funny.

Ima, what a wonderful story. I hope shared it on FB. Dean Smith, what can I say that hasn't already been said? Not much. What a great person.

He babysat for you while you ran home and grabbed your camera? That is an incredible story!

I never liked his basketball teams, but I always admired his stand on social justice issues. He used his position in the public eye to effect change. For that reason, I admire and applaud him.
