ACC baseball tourney

Post by CameronBornAndBred » May 22nd, 2009, 7:17 pm

Duke beat up Clemson tonight. We got UVA Saturday, I'm still thinking about going.
Duke born, Duke bred, cooking on a grill so I'm tailgate fed.

We need to be UVA fans tonight against carolina (not that we wouldn't anyway). If the heels win, they clinch our pool's berth in the championship round. Otherwise, we could still sneak in with a win vs. the 'Hoos tomorrow coupled with a unc loss to Climpsun. Since Climpsun is 0-2 so far in the ACC Tournament and generally a strong squad (safely in the NCAA Tournament already), you'd think they might want to save some face. unc only needs to win one of their remaining two games to clinch the championship spot vs. Florida State, who has already clinched from the other side.
Regardless of carolina's performance, if we could beat UVA tomorrow (totally possible after our regular season series victory against them), we could potentially get into the NCAA Tournament discussion. Several of the pre-ACC Tourney prognoses I read said that we needed to win 2 of 3 in the conference tournament for that to happen.
As mentioned above, that'd be Duke's first NCAA Tourney berth since 1961.

UVA's up 10-1 on the heels in the bottom of the 8th. I think it's pretty safe to say that the good guys will head into the final day of pool play tomorrow with a shot to get into the conference final.
A very nice accomplishment on the heels of an excellent step forward of a regular season, with hopefully another feather or two yet to be added to the team's cap!

With your "a very nice accomplishment on the heels" comment above, do you mean our guys or the 'hoos stomping of the heels tonight? Or both? :)) :))

I read those same or similar pundits-if we win 2 in the ACCT, we oughta be considered for an NCAAT berth but someone on DBR was saying the bracketology had BC going which would be horseshit as we beat them 2 outta 3, had more top 25 W's, a better overall ACC record and less "bad" losses.

According to tiebreaking procedures, we're eliminated from the ACC Championship round, as the best we can hope for is a three-way tie with UVA and carolina after pool play. Under that scenario, unc would advance, having finished highest in the regular-season standings among the three teams.
Nevertheless, a victory against the 'Hoos today would close the season on a nice note, with at least some hope for a few more games to be played.

Don't matter after last night's mighty collapse against the 'hoos. Leading with 2 freaking outs in the top of the 7th, we managed to turn a 4-2 lead into a 4-9 deficit giving away those 7 run on something like just 2 damn hits, a walk or two, 2 HBP and an error that would have ended the inning at 4-4 at the worst. We also pissed away 2 great opportunities in the 1st and 2nd innings having bases loaded with 0 or 1 out in the first and runners on 1st and 3rd with 0 or 1 out in the second and putting ZERO runs on the board. Too many losses to the likes of Liberty mid-week and series losses to wfu and the terps, the two worst teams in the ACC, have cost us an NCAA bid I fear. :((

And it turns out you're right...Boston College got the ACC's last bid, and presumably one of the last at-large bids in the field. While the Blue Devils came frustratingly close to a postseason berth this season, there's a lot to build on in the season's body of work. I think its tantalizing close also bears the common hallmark of a spur onward to "finishing the play." I look for the guys to play more consistently and win more of the games they're supposed to win next season. I'll not go quite so far as to say they'll break the postseason schneid, but I think lots of pieces for that kind of breakthrough are in place, not the least of which is a clearly solid coaching staff. Congrats to the team on a successful season. :ymapplause:

Now my college baseball allegiances switch to my graduate school alma mater, East Carolina...the Pirates won the Conference USA regular season and earned the right to host a regional in Greenville. Should they advance to the Super Regionals, they'd presumably play the hated tar heels, first-round hosts in the other half of the region.
GO PIRATES! :ar! :ar! :ar!
