Just like it's spelled. Colin. Short o, short i, emphasis on the first syllable.

How do you pronounce it?

Better question - how do YOU pronounce it? I can go with a long or short "o".

It is pronounced the same as call-in. I find most Americans mispronounce it because of Colin Powell. Apparently his grandmother couldn't pronounce it properly which is why his name ended up being pronounced the way it was. The pronunciation used for his name drives me freakin' nuts because it is, well, wrong.

And I asked because I heard an American newscaster talking about the storm today and he mispronounced it.

Most Americans you've met mispronounce your name? Bizarre. I had never heard Colin Powell's pronunciation until he became a public figure. I've never heard it pronounced that way since. I much prefer the pronunciation of your name versus Mr. Powell's.

Yeah most people mispronounce my last name too. Ay-hurn. Nope. It's Uh-hurn. About the only Americans who get it right are Irish-Americans in New England. Bloody Americans.

Yeah, even Colin Campbell (of the NHL), whose name cannot possibly be anything but Scottish (good God, they might as well have named him Hamish McGuillicudy) has his name mispronounced now. It was always pronounced correctly until Powell became well known but since then it has changed. Drives me bonkers.

I've mentioned in another thread (the one that included photos of lemurs) that I regularly listen to a radio station from London England. I will sometimes use that station's response feature to comment on stuff that is said during various shows. The mispronunciation of my name has become so common among Americans that it is actually nice to hear them pronounce it properly whenever it is used on that station (ie. Colin writes in and says "blah, blah, blah, blah, CTN rules, blah, blah blah"). Of course, being Brits, they know exactly how the name is supposed to be pronounced.

But seriously, pay attention to news coverage of the storm and you might notice how often it is mispronounced.

Well I thought that, now that you are a mod, it was mandatory to mention lemurs at least once per thread?

I had posted that thread simply because on of the presenters had been at the London Zoo with the lemurs and meerkats and they had posted photos on the webpage. I thought it rather appropriate.

All it takes is Miles or me to post something in a thread, and "lemur" will be mentioned. :D

On NPR this morning, they pronounced it correctly ("call-in"). I might not have noticed except I read this thread last night.

Well, so much for Colchar's namesake becoming the storm of the century. It's disappeared entirely.

Wouldn't it be cool if hurricane names were taken from CTN.

"Indoor66 is a category 6 storm moving at 66mph."

Hope you don't mind I used you Indoor66. It was the first CTN name that popped in my head.

It was all those damn ignorant weather folk not knowing how to pronounce his name. He got fed up and left the party. I don't blame him.
