Squash and zucchini are slowing down and my plants look beaten up. The end is near. On the good news front, I cut okra this morning.

Jalapeño pepper plants (three) are producing lots of peppers.

I ripped out all my squash and zucchini plants as well as tomato plants with the exception of one that is still relatively healthy. Okra, eggplants and peppers are producing. My focus is on cleaning up and improving my planting areas.

I went to Norfolk Feed and Seed this morning and bought some starter plants. The price was $2.49 per tray of three plants compared to $5.95 for one plant at Lowe’s plus the plants from NF&S look healthier. I bought 24 plants.

My plan over the next week is to plant lots of stuff in pots and grow bags. I’m also starting other plants from seed. Finally, I have lots of cleanup required in my two in ground plots.

Plenty of work ahead for the next two or three weeks but then it will calm down to just maintenance. I really enjoy backyard gardening.

For the most part, that's what we do. I ordered like 50 grow bags from Amazon three years ago, and still use the same ones. I bought clear plastic recycling bags and cut holes in them for drainage, and that's what I use as liners for the bags.

We're doing something new this year, and going big! We've ordered two "dumpster bags" from Amazon, and those will be filled with a straw base and compost/dirt on top. Can't wait to see how they do.

I've been clearing out my planters and pots from last year today, and transplanting things that I had started in the greenhouse a few weeks ago. Variety of tomatoes, eggplant, and peppers. When we get the big bags, more seedlings will be going in those, including Bob Green's Green Beans!

Bob Green’s Green Beans are seeds from the Philippines (Asian Long Beans) so they love the heat. The vines will produce tons of long beans throughout July, August and into September.

We were camping from Thursday-Sunday. I love vacations, but I am always worried about how things will look when I get home. Thankfully the watering I gave got added to naturally Saturday night and all of my young plants are in good shape.

PS, when I go on long trips, I worry more about my plants than my cats, lol. (Although I'm happy to see both when I get home.)

I planted my long bean seeds this afternoon and transplanted some grey zucchini plants I grew from seed. My garden is planted with one BIG exception — okra. I love okra.

Okra seeds will go in the ground later this week.

I’m headed to Norfolk County Feed and Seed to look at starter plants. Weather is going to be a little cool at night next week with forecast in the 40s but by the end of next week it will be time to plant.

I’ve been steadily working on cleaning up and preparing my garden plots so they are close to ready to go.

I’ve been harvesting spinach, romaine, kale and celery for some time this spring. Tomato plants are flowering with a few green cherry tomatoes on the vine.

Still waiting to see what the Brussels sprouts do — my first time, and they are massive but I don’t see any sprouts yet.

Cherry tomatoes going gangbusters, I pull 6-8 a morning off the vine. Big tomatoes have a few ripe and eaten, still coming in.

Caterpillars got my Brussels sprouts, still assessing.

Romaine and celery reaching the end of season. Purple kale going strong.

Herbs: dill reaching the end, parsley in second sprouting. Everything else good. Thyme, sage, rosemary, oregano, mint going gangbusters.
