Disaster In Japan

A major earthquake has hit Japan which was followed by a tsunami with another tsunami expected to hit. Tragically a lot of lives lost and even more lives devastated.

The reverberations are now hitting the US.
The tsunami is just now hitting Hawaii.
Warnings are up for much of the US Pacific coast.
I hope for the best for everyone, especially in Japan.

Heard from one classmate of mine who has lived over there for a few years and she's ok. Sounds like Tokyo isn't damaged too badly, but none of the trains are running, so getting around is kind of difficult.

I heard they were just playing it safe with the train, especially the subway, and were making sure there were no structural problems.

Diagnoses of damage and casualties continue to worsen. Japan will definitely need prayers and assistance for some time. I heard on the news this morning that three US Navy ships have already been deployed there (one was actually already in Japan) on relief missions.
The fact that 7-foot waves came ashore in Maui, which is nearly 4000 miles from Japan, really hammers home the massive power unleashed by a quake like this. It truly boggles the mind.

This quake is the 5th worst in the history of quake record keeping, and the worst in Japan in the history of quake record keeping.

Watch how the Japanese respond to this. I bet there will be very little looting and people calmly standing in lines for food and supplies. I love that the are a very respectful people with regards to all aspects of life.

Anyone here have any contacts in/near Sendai?

Mr. DA's cousin is married to a wonderful young Japanese woman from there, and she has not been able to reach her parents or older brother. She thinks they are safe, as they lived enough inland and in relatively new construction, but obviously, hearing from them or about them would go a long way to easing her very large fears.

TOKYO – Japan's government spokesman says the metal container sheltering a nuclear reactor was not affected by an explosion that destroyed the building it's in.

Yukio Edano says the radiation around the plant did not rise after the blast but instead is decreasing. He added that pressure in the reactor was also decreasing.

Younger brother from Tokyo finally heard from the family in Sendai, and they're ok. Minimal house damage, but no running water or gas, so no heat.

Sounds like it's going to be a long, tough road of recovery for the nation. This nuclear scare isn't helping, nor the 140+ aftershocks.
