I'm virtually positive that he did. As a moderate, he fielded consistent, vitriolic criticism from all sides, and he made no secret of the fact that he found our national schism to be terribly traumatic. His handling of the Civil War and all of the political troubles that pervaded his presidency consistently indicated that he held reconciliation as the very highest end goal. I'm sure that, throughout his time in office, he said something like that to himself just about every day.

I haven't read that, but I will, sight unseen, highly recommend any of Doris Kearns Goodwin's work. I have no doubt that it is excellent.

Incidentally, since we're all sports nuts here, her book Wait 'Til Next Year is terrific. It's a memoir of the role that baseball played in her childhood, in a family "equally divided between Dodger, Giant, and Yankee fans."
