Clemson football talking to Marion Hobby.

Post by CameronBornAndBred » January 5th, 2011, 1:51 pm

Clemson has contacted Duke DC / Assistant head coach Marion Hobby about taking over the coaching of their defensive line.

I would think it would be an odd move if he takes it, but I also wouldn't mind seeing a different strategy in our defense.

Coach Hobby is a smart man. I'm sure he's aware that the current staff at Clemson is probably a sinking ship. A new job there might last one year.

I have inquired as to how serious this is. More later.

Another source of information close to Duke says Coach Hobby is out recruiting for Duke today and has no knowledge of any deals with Clemson.

For Hobby to leave makes you wonder if there were any internal issues. While Clemson is a higher profile program, both schools winning out puts you in the same bowl, so eve if it's a higher profile, the prize at the end is same. In fact, it could be argued that from a career standpoint, if you take Duke to a ACC division title as a coordinator, you'll get bigger offers from other programs than if you take Clemson to the same level as a line coach.

So, what do you think the impetus was...
easier to recruit...
internal conflict with Cutcliffe...
higher paycheck...
Perceived lack of talent and lack of future talent arriving....

I'm really hoping its not the last one because I thought we'd made some progress and looked forward to seeing the redshirts next year. From my own selfish perspective, it's hard for me to wish him well. I really wanted him to stay.

I think it's a bizarre move. In fact, I think he is giving up more of the responsibility that he had at Duke, he was asssistant HC. For a guy that I would assume has HC aspirations, that's strange. I doubt it would be internal conflict with Cut, but you never know. They seemed to be on the same page for many years, they've had a long relationship. I'm a bit worried in how Duke recruiting might be affected, besides being the DC, he was heavy in recruiting. He was out on the trail when Clemson came calling. It would not surprise me to see some of those guys that he has been building relationships now follow him to Death Valley.

And that would really suck.

So, maybe the move wasn't as bizarre as we thought. It looks like Hobby was not going to be in the coordinator position, so it's not quite the move down from coordinator to line coach at another school that it may have looked like. Line coach at one school moving to another school is more common. Even if Dabo doesn't pan out at Clemson, Hobby has experience that will get him hired elsewhere.

The Herald-Sun - Hobby Leaving Duke not an easy choice
http://www.heraldsun.com/view/full_stor ... in_article

"Earlier this week, Cutcliffe wished Hobby well on his move to Clemson. He also said that Hobby was not pushed out. Despite Duke's defensive struggles last season, when the Blue Devils went 3-9 and finished last in the ACC in nearly every statistical category, Cutcliffe said he wanted Hobby back.

Still, Hobby did agree to move from a supervisory position as coordinator to a job where he is just coaching a position again and, more than likely, making less money.

"That's always tough," Hobby said Thursday at Clemson "But I've done both. I'm good with that. I've been a leader at different levels, and I've been a soldier. I'm comfortable with either one. It's a little bit different."

I read that article earlier this week, and it actually reinforced the bizareness to me. He's moving to a lesser position at Clemson. He would have still been the DC if he stayed at Duke.
