BC @ Duke

Post by CameronBornAndBred » November 8th, 2010, 8:33 am

Two wins in a row, one of them over an ACC opponent...in November! Can they do it again this Saturday? We all know the answer is yes, but what will it take?

Hopefully not another nail-biting, heart-pounding, barn burner where we give up 600+ yards and have to deflect the last hail Mary pass in the endone to prevent the potential tying/winning score.

BC starts off as a 3 point favorite. Good. More motivation for our guys.

Duke's offensive machine vs BC's defensive machine. The good news for Duke is that while BC is first in the ACC in defense, they are dead last in offense. If we keep them from scoring defensive points this should be a Duke victory. I'm guessing a low scoring game, Duke 17-BC 10.

The introduction of some news plays and maybe some new players, depending on the injury report and what takes place in practice, could be helpful in overcoming that BC defense.

I see our team in a much better frame of mind than a couple of weeks ago. It's apparent on the field and it's apparent in the players post game comments. They believe they can win. Confidence can't be bought. It must be earned..... and that's what they've been doing.

The injury report is a big concern. Hopefully, Conner Vernon is okay and his jaw isn't broken. I'm sure the staff will make the right decisions in regard to sitting players who need extra time to become healthy. As far as new plays and new players go, if Josh Snead is able to play, I'm looking forward to Duke running the toss sweep with him. I believe he has superior speed and the toss sweep could really set him lose.

I talked to my manager contact this PM about the tailgate and student attendance and forgot to ask about injuries. I'll try to text him tomorrow.

Coach Cutcliffe praises Ross Cockrell in this article:

He says, "Before it's over, he's going to be an all-conference corner."

Assuming Kelly and Vernon do not play, and I understand they have not practiced this week (neither has Josh Snead nor Brett Huffman), who gets the nod as the 3rd starting wide receiver alongside Varner and Braxton? I assume it would be Tyree Watkins who played a lot after Vernon was hurt, but Watkins tweaked his knee with 2:06 left in the game. Tony Foster started one game earlier in the year. Playing Brandon King at TE and sliding Cooper Helfet to wide receiver on some downs is another option.

Moving on into further what-if territory, but staying within the "we are suddenly thin at wide receiver" framework, I believe it would be interesting to see Corey Gattis given an opportunity as the slot receiver on that QB option play. Gattis rushed for a lot of yards as a QB at Durham Hillside. Perhaps he could make something happen.

I know, too much drama on my part as the injury report hasn't even been released yet. Talking about this stuff makes Saturday get here sooner. Well not really but you guys know what I mean.

I suspect Trezvant will get a few snaps at WR, too.

Any possibility a redshirt gets burned?

I doubt it. There are several receivers we can turn to such as Gattis and Matt Pridemore. At TE, we have two redshirt freshmen, Jack Farrell and Ryan Hall.

The roster only reflects two true freshmen wide receivers and Brandon Braxton is one of them. The other is Brandon Watkins from Durham Hillside. Do any of the local posters know anything about him (paging Wolfpack Devil). There is also a true freshman TE on the roster: Braxton Deaver from Charlotte Providence.

It would be really bad to burn a redshirt in one of the last 3 games, but if it has to be done, it has to be done.

Football injury report for 11-13

OG Brian Moore (lower body) – PROBABLE
C Bryan Morgan (upper body) – PROBABLE

WR Austin Kelly (head) – QUESTIONABLE
TE Brandon King (upper body) – QUESTIONABLE
RB Josh Snead (upper body) – QUESTIONABLE
WR Conner Vernon (head) – QUESTIONABLE

OG Brandon Harper (lower body) – OUT
TE Brett Huffman (lower body) – OUT

Damn that's a lot of names. I'm guessing we won't see Vernon on the field, I don't remember Kelly's injury, but I remember Vernon getting leveled.

I think Austin got hit about the head in the Navy game.
