Brandon Connette..Freshmen backup QB

Post by CameronBornAndBred » August 25th, 2010, 2:07 am

After tonight's scrimmage..read the whole article..lotta good stuff.
Meanwhile, Cutcliffe confirmed a noteworthy decision about who plays behind Renfree. True freshman Brandon Connette took all the snaps as the No. 2 quarterback and has won the job over redshirt freshman Sean Schroeder.

"I think we are at the point right now that Connette is our backup quarterback and we may have some opportunities for him to play in certain situations,'' Cutcliffe said.

By the way...that's beyond huge. As far as I know..the last true freshmen backup QB Duke had was named Thad Lewis. He got the starting job due to injury and then performance his freshmen year. There is no way Renfree loses the job to anything other than injury, but not redshirting Connette now means that Renfree always has a guy hungry for his job and able to take it over his shoulder. I was hoping Connette would be a redshirt..but I also want the best guy under center if Renfree goes down.

Sometimes even good quarterbacks hit a cold streak or need to rest. It's important to have another good one ready to hit the field so the game stays at a high level. :twocents:

I was raving about Brandon Connette after the spring game. Glad I was right.

I'm glad he's good...but I wish he would have redshirted. It's too bad Schroeder wasn't able to step up to the plate.

I just realized this is the guy who came up and introduced himself to me at the pep rally the other day! And the guy I almost walked straight into while I was leaving the library. Crazy :)
