Your favorite snacking apple
I'm here in apple country here in upstate NJ, and I was left to decide which snacking apple to take home to ILJ and LL. I had my choice of some 18 or so varieties of apples. I ruled out the cooking apples: Rome, Granny Smith, etc... Which snacking apple is your favorite?

Granny Smith apples are the only ones I ever eat. They are also great for cooking as they tend not to lose much of their consistency.

I always think of baking when I see Granny Smith, but they are also good to snack on.colchar wrote:Granny Smith apples are the only ones I ever eat. They are also great for cooking as they tend not to lose much of their consistency.
Again... I had about 18 or so snacking apples to choose from, and then add in another 10 or so cooking varieties. OVERKILL!!

Love me some Granny Smith apples. Great with caramel, great for apple crisp, great for apple cake, great with peanut butter, just great overall! Fujis are okay.

Pink Ladies have been my favorite for years, but that variety has recently been supplanted by Jazz. Both are pleasantly sweet with a hint of tartness and very juicy.

I dislike green and yellow apples.
The perfect apple is a crisp Macintosh, right off the tree. Bad macs are bad. But good macs are better than all else.

I've always been partial to Red Delicious. Golden Delicious are good too. Don't like Granny Smiths at all - way too tart for me.
I like to slice the apple and put some cheddar cheese on it. Peanut butter is also good, but not as good as cheddar.

There was a person at one of the TED get togethers who was discussing the growing lack of biodiversity. Apparently at one point here in the US there were some 5,000(?) varieties of apples. There are significantly less now.

I like Gala & Fugi. I bought 2 Gala trees this fall. Hope they do good. For cooking, I like Granny Smith and Golden Del. If your in a hurry, they can be cooked in the microwave. I cook them whole. Scoop out the seeds (I have a kitchen tool for this). I then put butter, sugar & cinnamon in the middle. YUM! Maybe part of this post should be on the recipe thread.

I like Gala and Fuji apples, too. I had both Gala and Fuji apple trees in my back yard in San Jose. I wonder if they'll grow here?Very Duke Blue wrote:I like Gala & Fugi. I bought the 2 gala apple trees in Duplin Co. from a very good nursery. She assures me they will grow in Efland.CathyCA wrote:I like Gala and Fuji apples, too. Re: Your favorite snacking apple
I just bought a bag of apples, and being brave I went with something other than my favorite granny smiths. I shouldn't have. I bought Pommes Royal Gala...red and yellow...these are mushy. Not "bad" mushy..they are supposed to be this way. Hopefully I can find a recipe or something for them, because they sure aren't good for snacking on.

Re: Your favorite snacking apple
While we're giving out apple facts, I recently read (here in the sample you can get for Kindle)that the apple trees Johnny Appleseed (John Chapman) planted all over the place were for apples that were lousy to eat, but were for making hard cider.YmoBeThere wrote:There was a person at one of the TED get togethers who was discussing the growing lack of biodiversity.
