Re: MLB: Blown call
What do people think of expanding instant replay and how far should it go? It seems that a blown call thread could have been posted any time this year!

Re: MLB: Blown call
I think the home run "boundary" calls that they have now is fine, but anything with any sort of continuing action is a bad idea for instant replay. So no safe or out calls, or even fair or foul on non home run calls. That's my worth.

I say we remove Umps from calling pitches, foul balls and throws to the base. Technology far exceeds the capabilities of humans to make these decisions.DukeUsul wrote:There's no need to make baseball any slower.

Electronic technology can also be used in football. A chip placed inside the ball could make the tough decision of whether it crosses the goal line or not.Miles wrote:I say we remove Umps from calling pitches, foul balls and throws to the base. I like that idea A LOT. I watched several college football games last year where the predestined team won only because the refs gave them lots of favorable ball placements. (i.e. first downs that weren't earned on 3rd down situations)captmojo wrote:Electronic technology can also be used in football. Most people say that is it is the intellect which makes a great scientist. They are wrong: it is character.

Re: MLB: Blown call
Not trying to steal the thread away from MLB, but this is one of the biggest complaints I have about football referees. They are doing the best they can, I think. It's a hard deal to figure exactly where the ball should be. We have the technology to drop any questions about it, so why not use it. Many times, it can be the difference in winning and losing.ArkieDukie wrote: I like that idea A LOT. Re: MLB: Blown call
The tough part would be determining when the player was down. Perhaps they could use video footage that showed the player position synchronized with the ball-goalline sensor. Refs could determine if the player was down and the "green light" was lit.captmojo wrote:Electronic technology can also be used in football. Re: MLB: Blown call
I'd like to see the first down "line" marked by a ... pardon me Tilly ... laser shot from one side of the field to the other, like the networks do with their imaginary yellow line. But having the laser set up on a movable holder on a fixed rail, with a mirror on the opposite side, you wouldn't have to "bring in the chains" any more. And the placement of the first down marker after each first down, and this is in general, is the most casually and carelessly done thing in football. I'll bet there is almost a yard variance from one first down to the next, and then such "care" is taken to measure the resultant 10 yards. They could use the laser for first down beginning markers, the "back end" of the chains, by placing the ball on the field, then "shooting" the tip of the ball and that's where the 10 yards begins.captmojo wrote:With the chip in the ball, a sensor strip laid under the turf...voila! Re: MLB: Blown call
Can the laser line curve to follow the crowning of the surface, from sideline, across the center of the field?

Re: MLB: Blown call
Skip the laser, and go with GPS, that would probably work pretty well with a receiver/transmitter inside the ball. Plus you don't want the NFL to be tempted to use the laser to attack players or coaches in order assist with the rigging of games.OZZIE4DUKE wrote:I'd like to see the first down "line" marked by a ... pardon me Tilly ... laser shot from one side of the field to the other, like the networks do with their imaginary yellow line.
