You asked WHY it is this shape...
Why do continents, large land masses, tend to become broad as they approach the North Pole, but tend to taper off as they approach the South Pole?

I argue that Europe, Asia, Australia, and Antarctica don't follow your rule. I also gave you evidence about India, South America, and Africa and their taper-tude. I also provided a response to your WHY, at least regarding South America, Africa, and India. :wizard: Just the facts, Jack.

And this doesn't even begin to discuss your use of a Mercator projection of the earth... :-B
Nope. NOT the facts.

Asia has no "taperage" at its northern end. Even Austrailia has two points where it "dips" southward at its base. Anartica's center is the south pole. It physically can NOT taper to an end, as it expands equally in all dirctions of longitude. Do you really, looking at a world map, do not get what I'm saying? You don't see it? You are the only one I know that can't see it. I DO appreciate your science on the matter, and yes, it IS informative! But really, just "observe" the world map. Do you NOT see where land masses tend to taper to the south? Pretty fucking clear to me and many others.

Dammit!

More simply put, look at a map of the world. Where does most of the land "tend" (not always) to be pointing? To the south. Flip the world map upside down. Where does most of the land "tend" (not always) to be pointing? To the north.

I am amazed that this can not be seen by some people. Not saying I'm right at all. I may very well be very wrong. Just seems a bit obvious to me. If nothing else, it's an interesting study on perception.

I didn't argue about Asia.

Technically, if a continent has an easternmost point, would you also say that it tapers in the east?

As for Australia, WHY do you ignore those two sharp TAPERS/POINTS in the north? I mean, Australia has two pretty sharp points to the north. Because if you really want to say that Australia tapers in the south, and not also look at its north points, I believe I'll turn in my compass.

Again, there ARE exceptions. but as a general rule, looking at the earth, there is a clear trend of things "pointing southward." I make my observation, admittedly, from a layman's perspective. But having the flames of my intrigue fueled, here are some links to what I am talking about. Maybe they put it in better words:

Again, all interesting stuff here. Good feedback and info, etc.

Any sane person can argue that the sky is NOT in fact Carowhinea blue, but I prefer Ozzie's explanation/joke about it. :9f:
On this, I agree completely! :D

I would drink soda while watching the Astros play when I lived in Houston. Does that make me an Astrofizzezist?
