Okay, today as I was macking on a Wendy's single (extra pickles) and a frosty, I got to thinking: "Golly. When I attended Elon, the school was known as the Elon College Fighting Christians. Well, then came the PC and Marketing police. Now, Elon is known as the Elon University Phoenix. Okay, not bad. Not bad. Especially considering the school burned down and then "rose up" again in the early 20th century.
But it got me to thinking, what if government went nuts and declared that no school may have a mascot affiliated in any way with a religion. In short, NO DEVILS or DEMONS!
If it were up to you, what would the NEW Duke mascot be?

I would name them the Duke Bulls after Mr. Duke's Bull Durham tobacco, and the Wake Forest Camels after Mr. Reynolds' Camel tobacco brand.
There you go. No more Blue Devils or Demon Deacons, but mascots honoring the tobacco leaf that built both of my schools.

From an April 1 edition of the Chronicle back in my day: The Duke Blue Camels. The story that went with it was that some rich gazillinaire from the Middle East made a large donation and wanted the name change.
