Little League Happenings

NDLL lost to Walkertown Little League, and thus we are finished until next year. All in all a great experience for the kids. Between the two tournaments (district and state) our all-stars compiled a record of 6 wins and 3 losses, nothing to sneeze at for a bunch of 11 year olds.

In addition to the games in Waynesville we took them to a bunch of waterfalls, to sliding rock, and a bunch of other "cool" mountain area stuff. The team that hosted the tournament were wonderful hosts and gave us lots of fun suggestions for things for the kids to do when we were not playing.

The kids were crushed after the loss that dropped us out of the tourney, but the great thing about 11 year olds is that by the next morning they were back to their "old selves", goofing off in the hotel pool, playing miniature golf, and basically having a great time. There is a lot to be learned from 11 year old resiliency.

By the way CathyCa - I will be shocked if Greenville is not the eventual winner of the tournament (to be determined on Thursday). They are an incredibly talented team.

Congrats to Dan and his teamates for a successfull season. They got to do some traveling that many others didn't..and one other silver lining is that you'll be back for a certain interview!

Sorry the kids lost but glad they had the opportunity to go to State. It's something they will remember for ever. I know the kids had a great time doing mountain things, thanks to adults.

Greenville really is a baseball town. From little league to the high schools to ECU, baseball is THE sport that permeates this town. I drove past the Elm Street Park last night, and it was eerily quiet. Of course, I knew where the kids were playing, thanks to Allen's reports here on CTN!

What we hear from folks familiar with VA traffic laws is that it is MUCH harder to get aticket reduced in VA than in NC - difficul eough that it is almost not worth bothering.

It probably isn't worth your trip to Lynchburg (Bedford? up that way, right?). Most VA courts don't really care about the effect of a ticket on insurance, unfortunately.

How much will the ticket increase your insurance? How much will it cost to hire an attorney? Weigh those two items and then decide.

Of course, I always recommend that folks hire a good attorney. ;)

You pay the attorney once. You pay for the insurance increase for 3 years. Don't forget to weigh that too.

The problem is, in some places in VA, you pay the attorney once AND you pay the insurance for 3 years. Here, the regular judge absolutely will not reduce speeding tickets unless you have a calibration (and then only the amount of the calibration). Other places in VA, or on the days we have a sub judge, things are different. It just depends on the judges, who are not elected by the populace, they are appointed by the legislature, so they don't ever get voted out. They stay til they retire, or get in large amounts of trouble, or they piss off the political party in power enough.

Twice I've gotten tickets in NC. Twice I've hired an attorrney (the same guy each time - $99 a pop). Both times he got it reduced to "improper wquipment". Money well spent.

He, and a couple attorneys who practice in VA, have said in VA it is almost impossible to get a ticket reduced there - it simply is not done. In NC, an attorney who has a relationshp with the ADA, acting on behalf of someone who has a clean driving record, has a lot of room to negotiate. In VA it virtually never happens. One guy I called (who was a friend of a friend) said he would pretty much be stealing my money if I hired him because he would know from the outset that he probably could do nothing for me.

I now officially hate Virginia. Fortunately since my wife and I both have clean driving records, and have been with the same insurance company for 20+ years, it is unlikely that this 14 mph over the limit will kill us in terms of rates. My big fear is we have a new 16 year old driver in the family and I was hoping to "save" that one time insurance company courtesy for his first ticket.

I would love to be able to negotiate tickets, especially for good people with clean records. It's one of those "there but for the grace of God go I" things. And there are a few places in VA that do negotiate, or at least used to. But we aren't one of those places.
