RIP George Steinbrenner

Post by EarlJam » July 13th, 2010, 10:00 am

Wow. Sad but fitting that he passed during All-Star weekend. I hate the Yankees, but there's no doubting the legacy of George. He was a giant of the game. If there's beer in heaven, maybe he and Billy Martin will be raising a glass shortly.

Here's to George.

His arrogance and iron fist were well know, but his generosity was not. ..most of the millions he donated came with a condition that they remain anonymous.
There is a children's ER here in Tampa that he donated the money to build...after his grand daughter made a trip to the ER with a broken bone he thought they needed one just for children...and made it happen.

I sat in front of him at spring training game a few years back...was as nice as could be...signed the bill of Yankee cap. Talked baseball with me. Exactly the opposite of what I expected!

From my post over yonder
Thank you George for all you've done for the Yankees, the many charities you've supported (mostly in silence) over the decades. You've put your money to good use for thousands of people, even those at carolina (through scholarship and other contributions - his son went there).

I'm sure there will be moment of silence at tonight's All Star game.

Condolences to the family and friends of George Steinbrenner. May he rest in peace.

Being an Orioles fan, I was never overly fond of the guy (I would've traded Peter Angelos and my first-born for him having ownership of the Birds, of course), but I respected his business acumen and, as little things about his altriusm appeared, I appreciated his generosity.
