Close Call or Not?

Okay, so around 11:53 today I cooked some soup in a pot on the gas stove (Campbell's Bean and Bacon with hot sauce and crackers). It was yummy. Trust me.

Anyway, afterwards I left to run a few errands this afternoon. Traffic on the perimeter was a pain in the buttocks but that's neither here nor there. Anyway, I was gone for about 2.5 hours. Upon my return, I changed clothes, relaxed and got ready to watch the Braves at 3:40.

"Man, I need some nachos," I thought to myself.

So I go into the kitchen, and out of my left eye I notice a blue flame. Turns out, I had left the stove on "low" setting the whole time I was gone.

Now, I know people that freak out if you leave the coffee maker or iron on........and even the dryer! How bad was leaving the gas fire lit? Could it really start a fire? In short, was it a close call or not?

Well it's much much better that it was on low and lit than on low and not lit (i.e., leaking gas with no flame). That's not much more flame than a pilot light. I've got a constant pilot light going in my ventless gas fireplace. Also one on the hot water heater.

I guess the real risk is if something larger and more flammable were able to fall into it. I don't have anything like that near the stove.

I poached an egg this morning, and left the water on low. I noticed it few hours later when I heard the strange sound of metal expanding. It was hot, really hot in the kitchen. Don't feel bad and like DukeUsul said, it's really no big deal unless you've got something nearby that's flammable or if you've just left the gas on with no flame.

I would think their hair could sizzle just like our arm hair, though.

I am referring, OF COURSE, to taking a small clipping from your kitty and holding it over a flame, NOT the whole cat. right? ;)

I caught my four year old busting open the child lock on our stove. I walked in right as he held a plastic shopping bag to the flame, which created a four foot long fire ball. Luckily, he was ducking and no one was burned. However, he got a rather stern talking to.

Chunky sirloin burger is my Campbell's fave, but mostly I eat Progresso Light to maintain my girlish physique. Or something like that.
