Major Duke athletics withdrawal

Post by TillyGalore » June 5th, 2010, 1:31 pm

I don't know about the rest of you, but I'm going through major ass Duke athletics withdrawal. There isn't anything Duke to watch. I think I'm going to need some uppers until football season starts.

MEEEEEE TOOOOOO! It used to start after March. But, now LAX addiction prolongs the high period. Then comes the malaise that isn't medicated until September. :sigh:

What in the world to ordinary people DO with themselves all year long?

Yea, it's boring without Duke ball. I hope in the future, Duke baseball can last longer. That would help.

I refer to this as the dark time of year. I'm not a fan of baseball (tough in a baseball town); football and basketball are really my sports. Bring on the fall!

What a cutie!

I'm also having Duke sports withdrawal. The History Channel helps some :-B but it doesn't fill the void til football season. I'm an Orioles fan so baseball is definitely out. :(( I suppose we'll watch the World Cup when it starts. MrLawgrad grew up in Ghana and went to school in Ivory Coast(missionary parents). He's teaching me soccer, I'm teaching him football and buying him NC shirts at every opportunity.

I've been watching lots of Reds baseball...they are doing well right after I moved to town? You might say coincidence, but the Red Sox won the Series the year I moved there and went to some games.

It's true that there's a hole left in my activities with no Duke sports currently being broadcast. For me, the off season is a time to reflect on all the good things which happened last academic year and read up on possibilities for the new year.

The off season is a good time to catch up on some suitable reading as well. I highly recommend Lewis Bowling's biography of Wallace Wade, now in a second edition with a foreword by Coach Cutcliffe. The focus of the book is more on the football field than on other aspects of Coach Wade's life and is a delight for a football enthusiast to read. I was pleased to learn that Coach Cutcliffe can be viewed as part of the Wade coaching tree. (Coach Wade left Alabama in 1931 to come to Duke. He recommended that Frank Thomas be hired to replace him. Bear Bryant arrived in Tuscaloosa to finish high school in 1931 and enrolled at the Capstone in 1932. He played for Frank Thomas.) In addition, since the great Alonzo Stagg took time to coach Wallace Wade when he was in prep school in Chicago, we might even extend that coaching tree back to Coach Stagg. Learning about all the things Coach Wade devised and created in coaching was both interesting and inspiring since many are still part of football today. Learning more about Wallace Wade has somehow made David Cutlciffe's arrival at Duke take on a greater, new meaning with his connection to the stadium's namesake.

The off season is a time of year to rest, renew and prepare. The recent weather patterns have contributed to especially abundant blooming in the plantings around my house. Enjoying being outside while working there is a treat. If you want more inspiration regarding the garden's cycle, find a copy of "Being There" (starring Peter Sellers)to watch. Though produced as a comedy, it's loaded with layers of symbolism. As an added bonus, much of it was filmed at the Biltmore House.
