Paintings vs. Photos

Post by EarlJam » May 4th, 2010, 1:06 am

This one is for Chris.

I have a serious question. I LOVE the paintings of Duke and other players in action. I love them more than the photos, ......but why?

The photos and the painting capture the exact same thing right? Or do they?

Discuss.

-EarlJam

P.S. I still want a print of Chris' painting of the trail that bends slightly behind the brushes to the left.

They do.
They both capture the exact same image.
Neither of them expresses the image the same.

Also, I want to be very clear that in no way was I saying, in effect, "So!? They look the same!"

Far from it. I can clearly tell how much more special the painting is, and how it really brings the moment to life far more than a mere photo could ever do.

I just couldn't find the word or words to explain why that is. You did.

Again, awesome work!

I disagree. I do not feel a painting and a picture shows the same exact thing.
Well ok, there are some that do and are done in a purposeful fashion to be identical,
but the majority of the paintings show more of a human interpretation versus a mechanical one.
A brush stroke, IMHO, says way way more than a single pixel of a picture. Plus there is the human equation, the element that goes into the painting that conveys something that a picture doesn't.

I'll take a painting over a picture any day of the week.

Agreed, hence, my follow-up post...

I think I get the point your making but I think photographers can be just as expressive as painters, illustrators, sculptors, potters, etc. Give 10 photographers the same camera and the same subject matter and ask them to take pictures, and you'll end up with 10 very different photos. People interpret things differently and that translates or is expressed in the print, whether it be digital or paper/chemistry based.

I completely agree. I have a number of photos that work much better as the photo they are instead of the painting that they could be. Here's one example..

Gorgeous and a great example. Nice composition, contrast, and lots of movement. Hurray photographs.
