Shaking Hands

Post by EarlJam » April 19th, 2010, 2:36 pm

I believe the Japanese got this one right. They bow to each other instead of shaking hands. Such an act seems to show more respect and most importantly, it's much more hygienic.

It happens all the time. Go out for dinner, meet new guests or someone you haven't seen in a while, shake all the hands....nice and firm, then eat. Damn. I don't know about that. I think I'd rather bow. I mean even the cleanest of hands can go to some pretty bad places.

With some foods, it's okay, as your fingers never touch it. But what about shaking five people's hands just before you sit down to eat some juicy finger-lickin' good fried chicken? I know, I know. There are options. You can go to the bathroom before eating, or you can whip out the Purell sanitizer. But why not just bow or something. Dang.

How do germaphobes handle this? Fist bump? Make an excuse ("I have a cold and shouldn't shake your hand")?

My wife has a little thingy of hand sanitizer on her key ring that she uses at the first tactful opportunity. That or you wait a few minutes, but before the food comes, and excuse yourself to go to the bathroom and wash up.

I hate hand sanitizer. Anything antibacterial does two things...kills the good bacteria (yes you have some) and in the long term would logically have the same effect as over using antibiotics....hello Mr. SuperBacteria how did you get here?

They don't do a thing for virus transmission either.

I really hate it for kids. Really Really. Antibacterial soaps too.

I'll forgive you if bow when you see me :D

I'm with you windsor, I try not to over sanitize my hands. We've made it this long in life (which is a lot and I mean a lot longer than most people realize) without the stuff.

I had a roommate that refused to let his kids play on gym equipment in public parks. He was afraid of them getting sick. I think he was setting them up for disaster. FIrst time they get a little bug or a cold, they are screwed.

A few germs are good for you. You need to build up your immunity somehow. Next thing you know, they will be telling us not to eat cookie dough due to the raw eggs. :D

I'm with you. I even serve killer egg nog on Christmas Eve made with raw egg yolks. Have for many years - no illnesses yet. Of course, there is probably a lot of plaque buildup in the arteries from a cup. I must put DD on speed dial. :D

DD is the expert. I go with red wine for heart health, not stout.

I won't offer you any egg nog if you come to my house on Christmas Eve. :D

How is this possible? You MUST have pastrami...on rye...mustard... pickle...maybe some swiss cheese. Hot.

I'm willing to try pastrami - but draw the line at a pickle. I don't like pickles.

(I hope my pastrami admission doesn't get me booted from the board.)

No, we won't. Oh, wait, I'm not a mod anymore. You'll have to check with EJ and CathyCA :D

NO mustard on my pastrami. I like it by itself on the (seeded) rye. Although it's also great with cole slaw and/or thousand island (Russian) dressing. :D

We'll have to do something about your pastrami deficit when you come for the Alabama game...

Me: No cheese here. Simply rye, pastrami, mustard, sour pickle on the side, maybe with a knish.

ILJ: Pastrami on bagel with cream cheese.

Legacy Lady: Has yet to gain an appreciation for pastrami. That WILL change.
