GPS Recommendations?
My Garmin nuvi 760 croaked over the weekend after 2 years. Strangely, it worked for one trip and then didn't come back on at all. This puts me in the market for a new system. Anyone have any recommendations, or alternatively, any way to fix my 2 year old GPS?

Re: GPS Recommendations?
Very strange indeed. Maybe it's just "locked up". If you have a removable battery, open the case, take it out, put it back in, and then try to turn it on, preferably with the power cord connected and the car's outlet on. This should give you a hard reboot. I have a Garmin Nuvi 780 (no removable battery) and it has a slide on/off/lock switch - yours may too - and it may have gotten "moved" accidentally so play with that if the above doesn't work. Mine also has a small "reset" button that can be pushed if it has locked up on boot, which has happened a couple of times.ArkieDukie wrote:My Garmin nuvi 760 croaked over the weekend after 2 years. If all fails, Costco (online only) has the Garmin Nuvi 765T on (closeout) sale this month for $249.95, including LIFETIME map upgrades ($120 normal cost, upgrades available 4 times per year) and of course the T gives you free lifetime traffic. This is a great deal. If you're not a Costco member, PM me and we'll work out something.

Re: GPS Recommendations?
It has been recalled to life! I had to hold the power switch for it to power up. The Garmin name would show up, but then the screen went black. It came on when I plugged it in to my computer. Still only have the Garmin logo on screen, though. Now I'll have to figure out how to reboot the darn thing. Thanks, Oz!

Yup, that's the same slide switch I have - which way turns it off? Which way and how do you have to hold it to turn it on? Those are questions I deal with each time I use it - the labeling on the switch is really small print!ArkieDukie wrote:It has been recalled to life! I had to hold the power switch for it to power up. Also, it sounds like you turned it on using the battery, and it died right away. The computer/USB port provides power, which is why it came on!

Re: GPS Recommendations?
While I had the nuvi hooked up to my computer I upgraded the firmware and the maps. All appears to be okay now. It will be interesting to see if the new map corrects some of the roads that the old map (only a year old) didn't know about.

I was going to suggest you buy a new Lexus! I love the GPS in that thing. Guess that's sort of overkill though, huh?

I bought a set of 4 run-flat tires from Continental tire co. They gave me a GPS for free.
