This is indeed a great, interesting and informative read. Kind of makes you want to give a big middle finger to NBA owners. "The illusion of regret." Good stuff.
I think Simmons had some good ideas but like he wrote, "How does this affect me? Should I even care?" I like the local NBA team (Hawks), and can get into them to a degree, but I don't think I'll ever be a diehard fan of any NBA team.
I like this (from the article):
In Cleveland, the Cavs asked for 2010-11 renewals last month under the guise of an "Early Bird Special." Cavs season-ticket holders will have to decide before the 2010 playoffs start, "Am I keeping my tickets next year? Am I rolling the dice that LeBron comes back?" If they keep them, and LeBron doesn't come back, it's going to feel like getting tipped over in a port-o-john. And yes, the Cavs would be doing the tipping.

Doesn't this go beyond just the NBA, though? Shouldn't we feel the same way about everybody in
all the professional sports? Intellectually, I grasp this, but emotionally, I would find it nigh impossible to let my professional sports loyalties (the Braves, and to a lesser extent, the Falcons) lapse.

True. I agree. As he was talking about the Clippers, same could go with me as a Braves fan, and to a slightly lesser extent, a Falcons fan. Yes, the point is, all serious fans of sport have "their teams" that they are and will remain loyal to, to a fault, and those fans deserver better.
