Nobody other than Canada and the US are any good in women's hockey (except, of course, when the US loses to Sweden ;)). Since this tournament started it has boiled down to Canada vs. the US for gold and everyone else playing for the bronze. Seriously, in future they should just have a seven game series between Canada and the US for gold and let everyone else have a normal tournament for the bronze.

With the way the Canadian women are playing, the US will be in tough against them.

The U.S. women have had themselves a fine tournament too. A U.S.-Eh matchup on Thursday would be a treat.

Canadian fans are mean....
A Danish curler was brought to tears after a boisterous Canadian crowd intentionally distracted her during crucial shots in her team's match against the home nation.

Curling Crazies?

If it was intentional, that is just asinine. The problem is that many of the people there aren't real curling fans and are only there for the Olympics thus they are unfamiliar with the etiquette involved. That being said, they have been loud for every match and the other players have all managed to handle it. They were particularly loud during the Canada vs. Britain men's match the other day and the actually crowd broke into a spontaneous rendition of Oh Canada. I was watching the match and the curlers from other countries just stopped playing (on all of the ice sheets) and laughed or smiled through it and then went back to playing once the crowd had settled down.

Ice Dancing Free Dance tonight: The best thing about ice dancing is that they get have vocals in the music.

The opening performance on TV tonight is a Canadian couple who are skating to a classical nocturne, followed by Bohemian Rhapsody ... all on violin. :-o

Well, if you can't have Freddie Mercury singing it...

colchar wrote:The U.S team won the hockey game. Now the U.S gets to rest until the quarter-finals and Canada has to play on Tuesday to get into the quarters. Then again, we're playing Germany and will blow them out of the rink.

Miller played great in the U.S net and basically stole the game for the Yanks. That being said, Brodeur played poorly and, to some extent, cost us the game. They shoulda pulled him during the game and there is no way he should be given another start in these Olympics. Heck, he shouldn't even be the back-up the way he is playing. Time to start Luongo and put Fleury on the bench as the back-up.

Fuck me, I am so sick of the way Canadian teams are picked lately and how they make some decisions for our team. We need to make some big changes in our program because, on paper, nobody should be able to touch us.

I am one severely pissed off puppy right now.
I think the loss is good for Canada's gold medal hopes (and would've been good for the U.S. as well). Yes, the bye is nice, especially in light of the effort and energy both teams expended in last night's game. But, Canada now gets another game to play together as a team. That's a good thing, IMO. It's worth noting that each of the last two gold medal winning teams (Sweden and Canada) took losses in the preliminary round. That certainly doesn't say that the extra game helped them, but it does suggest that having the bye to the quarters isn't necessary.

Canada still has the most talented team in the tournament. And the U.S. still has the 3rd or 4th most talented team. The difference last night was that the U.S. got better play in the net, and, as we've discussed previously in this thread, that can carry a team.

I thought first and second place were much closer than the final scores indicated. Serious home cooking. Virtue and Moir were great, as were Davis and White. Don't like Domnina and Shabalin, but they skated okay. Belbin and Agosto were sacrificial lambs to prevent a North American podium sweep, as was predicted months ago.

Tessa Virtue's pair was highly deserving of the gold medal, and they really were fun to watch both during and after their performance.

Seriously, the Canadian pair was GREAT. In all honesty, in terms of sheer entertainment, they were fantastic, and really showed a great attitude as well.

The Russian pair did NOTHING for me. Part of it was due to the fact that the guy was somewhat injured.

All of the top four groups skated cleanly, and each had its highest score of the season.

I wonder if the Russian TV folks were highly critical of the judging in this competition. My only criticism is that I felt the second pair of Americans should have taken 3rd. Big deal.

That leaves us now with just the LADIES competition. Will NOT be watching that.

I've paid a good bit of attention to that discussion. To be fair, though, there have been some good counterpoints made that people said basically the same about women's soccer back when it was the U.S., China (and to a lesser extent, Norway), and everyone else. Today, women's soccer is quite healthy.
Nevertheless, women's hockey people should be concerned, as the sport will doubtless go the Olympic way of baseball and softball if competitive balance does not improve.

2 weeks ago, ESPN's Outside the Lines did a story about the attempt to make women's ski jumping an Olympic event. Although it passed one major committee, it ultimately failed because the IOC thought there wasn't enough of a competitive balance in the sport. In a response to the segment, one viewer added that if women's ice hockey is an IOC sport without balance, why shouldn't women's ski jumping?

If they want to keep women's hockey in the Olympics they need to change it. Until other countries become competitive they need to just have a seven game series (just like the Stanley Cup finals) between Canada and the US for the gold. The rest of the countries can then play in each other in games that would be competitive to determine who wins bronze. I simply do not see how the lesser teams can develop when constantly getting their asses kicked by Canada and the US.

Women's curling falling behind China. China up 4-2 after 5 Ends. US just had a chance to tie it up at 3 while they had the hammer, but they missed and China stole one. Women need a lot of help to advance.

Edit: oops had the scores wrong, but the point is the same. Now corrected.
