I concur - that was very very well played!

Tonight's men's downhill has been postponed due to fog and rain. No word on when it will go forward.
This means Apolo Ohno will get tonight's spotlight all to himself for the 1500m.

Dude, I expect a lot more races to be postponed. I seriously cannot figure out why they awarded the games to a city with a climate like Vancouver's.

I read that a number of the U.S. skiers regard this as an advantage for them, as the U.S. championships are always late in the season, and they're all more accustomed to skiing powder/slush as opposed to icier conditions than many of the European skiers. It will be interesting.colchar wrote:Dude, I expect a lot more races to be postponed. I seriously cannot figure out why they awarded the games to a city with a climate like Vancouver's.

On the bright side, at least they didn't have any GoDaddy.com commercials/sponsorships for the Olympics. ;)

Re: Winter Olympics Thread: Vancouver 2010
No, I don't. I think there is precious little overlap between the viewership for the dunk contest and the Winter Olympics. This is why I still think the dunk contest will draw about 6 million. It drew almost 7 million last year, and I just don't see how it declines by 45% this year.Lavabe wrote:Think that will sop up viewers from the NBA slam-dunk contest?wilson wrote:Tonight's men's downhill has been postponed due to fog and rain. Exciting day to start the Olympics. Men's Short Track and Women's Freestyle Moguls were both equally exciting events.

Re: Winter Olympics Thread: Vancouver 2010
Judged events are a joke. In ski-jumping, the third place finisher actually had a longer jump than the second place finisher. Ridiculous. As far as I am concerned, distance is all that should matter. I don't care if you are flailing your arms the whole way, if you jump furthest you should win.

Is there an event in which judging doesn't play a significant role in determining the outcome? Even the speed events, such as speedskating, have judges who often evaluate whether or not someone gained speed illegally.
And don't get me started with judging in hockey! Officer Koharski?

The Lindsey Jacobellis D'oh of the Day Award goes to the Korean speedskater who made a move from 3rd to 2nd on the final turn, and in the process wiped out himself and his countrymate, leaving open a silver and a bronze for Americans Ohno and Celski.Miles wrote:Exciting day to start the Olympics. Yeah, there are plenty of them. Judges in speed skating are referees determining that no rules were broken just like refs in hockey, football, etc. But in judged events the winners are determined by opinion and, in the case of figure skating, by collusion amongst corrupt judges.
