Rumor has it that the Canadians permanently lost their smile after their military defeat in Dieppe in 1942. An opposite prelude to Operation Overlord a couple of years later, the Canadian forces lost almost half of thier 6,000 troops to German forces.

But OH! Canada! Get your smile back! You are one of the few countries that can claim victory over the U.S. (i.e. war of 1812). :) (virtual Canadian flag)

If you can find a Union Jack and either of the Scottish flags I'd be eternally grateful.

Dieppe is a touchy subject. But I get the meaning of your post.

The US scored in overtime to win the game and the gold medal (six years to the day since their last gold medal which they earned for beating Canada in Helsinki). Once again, Canada wins five world championships in a row but just cannot win the sixth one.

That, by the way, should give you an idea of how seriously we take our hockey. Our 17 and 18 year old kids have won five straight world championships (and we've accomplished that on, I think, three occasions - maybe four) and we're crushed when they can't win a sixth. Any other country, in any other sport, would consider five straight world championships as an incredible accomplishment but we expect more - anything but gold is considered failure.

Fuck.
Maybe y'all in Canada will have better luck in curling. ;)

To give you a feel for how seriously we take our hockey down here, we had NONE of the game on TV. :sigh: I doubt it will appear on ESPN Sportscenter this morning. They HAVE mentioned, however, how we can watch the World Cup on ESPN 3-D. :twitch:

Sad, sad, sad. Hockey is a great sport and soccer is barely a sport yet ESPN will cover it?!? Sad.

Soccer is a GREAT sport, as is hockey, but I have to admit that Gary Bettman is the one who let hockey slip away from ESPN. Don't blame ESPN for this one.

Gary Butthead is an absolute freakin' idiot. Don't get me started on that arsehole.

As for soccer - we'll just have to agree to disagree.

We might have to disagree as well...
In fact, most of the world might have to disagree with you. :D

The olympics smiley came up as text in the quote. That's the first I've actually seen that.

If you put a space between the quote brackets, you'll get to see the emoticon.

No need to apologize. I was curious as to why the smiley wouldn't work.

In that case, look at the controversial SI cover shot of Lindsey Vonn:
