I'm using my birth year post (1961) to voice my total distaste for that tool bag, Billy Packer.

Re: Least Favorite Voice of College Basketball
I picked Brent Musberger. Much as I can't stand the 2010 version of Dick Vitale, if you listen to games he did in the '80s, he used to be a pretty good analyst who talked about, you know, the game going on in front of him. I never could stand Musberger. Still can't. How does that man have a job as a announcer, how!?!
The time is out of joint, O cursed spite!

I picked Elmore because he's always so negative and annoying and hates us.
Vitale I could enjoy if he just moved to the studio and became a network cheerleader.
I really should have picked Packer for talking so rudely to my lady friends in the band.

Dickie V annoys me more, though I hate Billy Fucking Packer more. So I guess I voted for the one I'd wish a chronic case of laryngitis on, versus the one I'd rather throw into a fire ant mound.

I enjoyed chanting "Mr Cash!" at Packer, along with the rest of the Crazies. Made him mad.

I remember when that happened. It was funny.ArkieDukie wrote:I enjoyed chanting "Mr Cash!" at Packer, along with the rest of the Crazies. Made him mad.
I picked Mike Patrick. I'm not sure which is worse, his voice or having to look at him. Mmm, probably looking at him.

I voted for(?) Dumb ass Digger. Do I really have to explain?
Lundquist is great on football but should really stay away from basketball. He doesn't seem to know the game.

Re: Least Favorite Voice of College Basketball
Is it safe to say that Dick Vitale has become the Howard Cosell of this generation?
Personally, I don't mind Vitale. YES, I CAN see where people have issues with him, and to a large part, I agree. But I grew up with Vitale, and what he did for college basketball in the 80s and early 90s just can't be over-stated. I believe that in the end, history will be very kind to Vitale, and will show that he was a wonderful spokesperson for the game. Perhaps his time has simply passed him by - like Ali and his very "Favresque" retire/comeback/retire/comeback trends in the late 70s, ending in humiliation to Larry Holmes in 1980 (I think he had a fight with Trevor Berbick (sp?) later but it was so obvious his time had come and gone).
Anyway, I just can't vote against Dickie V. I like the man too much. But agian, I believe all discussions about his being "annoying" to be quite valid these days. Just like Cosell in the 70s and 80s.

I think this is very well stated. It certainly encapsulates the way I feel about Dickie V...He is past his time and annoying, but he has made an undeniably positive contribution to the game overall.EarlJam wrote:Is it safe to say that Dick Vitale has become the Howard Cosell of this generation?

I would also like to add to the above that I have met him on a couple of occasions, and he simply could not be a nicer, more approachable guy. My favorite memory of him was our encounter after the filming of ESPN's 2000-01 season preview special in Cameron. He chatted with us for several minutes, signed whatever we all thrust at him, and was a very genuine man.
Yet another such story comes from my uncle. Over the years, he & my aunt & cousin have made a number of trips to New York City during the Christmas season. One year, they happened to be up there the same weekend as Duke's NYC game. My uncle walked up to Dickie V in their hotel lobby on Friday morning, having seen him there by dumb luck and wanting to meet him. During their conversation, my uncle half-jokingly asked if Dickie V could get him tickets to the next day's game, and Dickie V said probably so, and that he'd see what he could do. My uncle and his family left for their day's adventures, and he was rightfully skeptical about actually scoring tickets.
Lo and behold, when they got back to the hotel that evening, the concierge told them they had a message waiting. It was an envelope holding a short note and three tickets to the game, about 20 rows up downstairs.
How many national celebrities do stuff like that?

Mr. Bilas doth try once again to nearly go overboard with his style of seeming to be objective, tonight.

Just a reminder that if this poll is still open, yesterday should be all the evidence we need to increase our tally against Verne.
