Apologies to anyone here that may be related to Fran, but I have had three experiences with him; two live and in person (he lives in Atlanta) and one I just saw on television.

in all cases, I find him to be somewhat of an asshole. :|

About 3 years ago, he had something like 3 hours on the Atlanta sports talk radio station. The guy is quite opinionated, and doesn't mind letting you know it.

I only know him from seeing him RUN FOR HIS LIFE to get away from Deacon Jones and Rosie Greer.

I remember him best from his days with Giants, back when they weren't that good. You know ... Tarkenton to Homer Jones on pass plays.

IIRC, didn't Homer bring us/invent THE SPIKE?

That's how I first knew Fran too. Remember Homer Jones, but don't remember the spike.

I first learned about Fran Tarkenton in Sunday School back in the 1960s. We read a story about bullying. The kids were teasing young Fran Tarkenton for having a girl's name. His father, a Methodist minister, told Fran that he was named after Francis Asbury, a circuit riding preacher who came to this country from England and helped to establish the Methodist Church around the time of the Revolutionary War. Fran's father told him that one way he could stop the bullying was to go out on the football field and prove himself to everyone who was teasing him.

I've always liked Fran Tarkenton because like me, he was a PK who got teased by his childhood friends.

It took me a minute to realize the PK was Preacher's Kid and not Place Kicker. Fran Tarkenton was a QB, not a PK. :D

I also NEVER before heard of it in reference to a Preacher's Kid.

Interesting...it took me a long time to realize "PK" didn't indicate that every NFL team included at least one Preacher's Kid.
OK, mostly I'm kidding, but "PK" in my world always indicated "Preacher's Kid." To be fair, though, my world has always prominently featured several preachers and their kids.

To be fair, my world has NEVER prominently featured preachers and their kids. Where I came from, the term PREACHER wasn't commonly used (as opposed to minister, priest, rabbi, father). Like Ozzie, I thought sports. PK=Penalty Kick.

There is another PK, perhaps less well known.... principal's kid. I lived with that one growing up. One stereotype held that everything a PK got (grades, awards) was easy and was fixed. Not true!

Don't I know it...I'm a double PK in that context. That's right, both of my parents were principals. As you have said, it doesn't mean you get everything handed to you; rather, it means your parents know all of your teachers, and they know you got in trouble that day before you even get home. Can't get away with a damned thing.

Amazing. I heard the exact same thing from my Dad (or possibly grandfather or great uncle), all of whom were United Methodist preachers. And I always liked Fran Tarkenton for the same reason. PK's unite!
