She did not go to carolina. She went to Wingate (south of Charlotte), where she played tennis. And she says she just likes Wake, basically because they're the Little Engine that Does.
She wouldn't have liked what we were saying in the chat room during the Wake vs. Xavier game.

Congratulations on passing your comps.

My SIL went to Wingate. My cousin taught history at Wingate. And, there is a book in the library at Wingate on the Scopes trial that someone gave in honor of my grandfather. (I learn all kinds of things surfing the web. I just learned this tonight.)

There are good people at Wingate. I'm sure that Katie is one of them. I wish you much happiness together.

Bring Katie to a Brunchgate!

I'm glad you passed your comps Wilson! Way to go.

We seem to be stuck in the same boat with the unc girls though... Hmm...

Yes, but don't tell wilson. Besides, she didn't actually go to UNC, so, there's hope.

I am hoping to get 'Almost Made in Heaven' staged Reunion weekend. I'll work on something getting something in Charlotte. I have no idea if Charlotte even has a theater scene. If you'd really like a third time zone, I could work on Nashville!

I'd actually prefer a 1-3-1 zone...

Charlotte has a few small community theaters and North Davidson neighborhood (or NoDa as the city planner and trendsters call it) has a cool art scene. I don't know how active the community is but I know a few people to ask. I'll see what I can learn.

Nashville would be good, but it'll have to wait for spring. I'm done with cold weather traveling this year.

Not to worry, this all mythical anyway! The other place I'd really love to get a show up is the ATL. I'd love an excuse to go down there.

I don't know if the Atlanta Mafia has any connections in theater. Wilson? EJ?

Aw, c'mon, Ozzie, don't be harshin' my mellow! Besides, wilson knows that I take every comment from him in exactly the spirit with which is was intended. Right, wilson? ;)

Anyway, with regard to this thread's title, the good news is the following: I passed comps officially on Dec. 4. For the following three weeks, I pretty much did nothing . . .
Congrats on passing comps. I am well aware of exactly what you went through and know that it is no small accomplishment. Welcome to A.B.D. status - time to rediscover the joy of video games, reading for pleasure, and just generally being a vegetable.

I'm so excited about teaching I can barely sit straight. Among my several beloved professional pursuits, it is the one that most makes me feel like I'm doing what I was put on Earth to do.
Teaching can be a lot of fun. It would be even more fun if one didn't have to deal with undergrads...

Lastly, as several of you have noticed on Facebook, I have taken up with a fun, sweet, beautiful woman. We've spent a ton of time doing things like playing Rummikub (no, seriously, Tilly...we really do play a bunch of Rummikub) on the couch while I cook for her, which sounds boring, but it's been balls cold here lately (kind of like everywhere else), and you can't just automatically do boring shit with anyone. She was cool enough to double date with a good friend of mine and his fiancee at Monster Jam this past Saturday. Hockey game this coming Thursday. It's funny how the company of a good woman gets you out doing the things you always bullshit about doing but never follow through on.
OK, now for the bad news...
She's a tar heel. Yeah. Born and raised in Bellwood, NC, a map dot with not even a traffic light, it's sort of a natural choice for her. But it still sucks.
That said, there is good in her. I've felt it. I can save her. I can turn her to the good side. I have to try.
While she and her mother root for the heels, her dad is a Duke fan, and her brother went to NC State. She also admitted to me on Saturday (as we watched the Duke game with pitchers before Monster Jam) that she could probably root for Duke as long as they're not playing carolina or Wake.
She's really sort of a soft tar heel...not rabid in any sense, doesn't see many of their games, has never been to a game. But as trivial as it all really is, it's something that does need to be addressed, and I've sort of made it known. I told her on Saturday that sports are the one thing most likely to make my show my (figurative) ass, and that I will never root for the heels under any circumstances whatsoever. I've also basically told her that if she chooses to root for the heels, then with regard to any Duke-carolina tilt, our best course of action is simply not to discuss it. She snuck in one snide comment on Saturday (albeit a particularly incendiary one, calling K "ratface"), and I didn't get ugly, but I did sort of firmly reply, "I'm serious. You really don't wanna start that." About 12 hours later, she agreed to be my gal, so I suppose I haven't freaked her out yet, but I'd be lying if I said I wasn't about 5% worried that I really could do so at some point.
So anyway, that's the long and the short of it.
Congrats on the new lady but my sympathies for the fact that she is a Tar Heel. Then again, since she didn't attend UNC there is always hope that you can use your skills of persuasion to convert her. Be a historian - gather the evidence and present your argument just as you would in your dissertation. She can help but be swayed by the facts but, even if she can't be brought back from the dark side, keep in mind that mixed marriages/relationships often work out fine. My parents are Scottish - my Mom Catholic and my Dad Protestant. That is Scotland's version of a mixed marriage and the animosity between those two groups far exceeds anything that could ever exist between Dukies and Tar Holes. My parents did fine so there is always hope that the two of you will be fine too. Just make sure your kids go to Duke ;)

Congratulations on your comps!! As to the mixed relationship you find yourself in, it can work out. I promise. I've remarked many times, over the past 6 years that Stevo and I have been together, that there is indeed hope for the Middle East. Seriously. I hate the hell out of unc while I dearly love my boy toy tarhole! You just have to have boundaries and respect them. No ragging on each other over the superior shade of blue and you should have relatively smooth sailing. Never, ever watch Duke play the holes with each other. That is a must. Keep your anti-anemic blue remarks to yourself when in her presence and expect the same from her.

Have fun!
