Cursing - Is it really an issue?

Post by EarlJam » January 5th, 2010, 7:16 pm

I've been thinking of late. I mean, what makes a cuss word? Social norms, interpretation, and what we have defined to be "moral" certainly comes into play. But isn't the heart (or soul) the ultimate thing to be "judged?" I mean, a cuss word is nothing but sound waves being delivered by the voice box through a tongue and mouth trained to manipulate the waves. It is a physical element, and nothing more. Now, that said, the intent BEHIND the word, or, the "heart" is the true measure. Right?

This all started when honestly, I stubbed my toe against a leg on a couch over the Holiday week. I briefly yelled, "Dammit!" My mom chastised (sp) me. I mean, come on. I had no ill intent. It was a reflex.

Had I yelled the Congo version of dammit, say, "Oogabaki," would she have been so upset? Maybe in that culture that's the worst thing you can say. My point is, for some reason in Western or maybe specifically Southern American culture we have really placed too much emphasis on cussing, while ignoring what's most important....the intention of the heart and soul.

If I may use an example from nature: Say a deer is strolling along in the forest eating some greens. Suddenly, a deer hunter in Roxboro fires his gun and blows a hole through its neck. The deer makes a sound: "Arrruuuooogh," then drops. Did the deer curse? I'd say yes. And I say there was nothing immoral about it.

Don't get me wrong, you can't go wrong with NOT cursing. It's a good thing. I'm just saying.

Man. Should pot be legal?

S(pecial) H(igh) I(ntensity) T(raining)

MEMORANDUM

TO: All Employees

FROM: Communications Services

SUBJECT: SPECIAL HIGH INTENSITY TRAINING

In order to assure that we continue to produce the highest quality work possible, it will be our policy to keep all employees well-trained though our Special High Intensity Training (S.H.I.T.). We are giving our employees more S.H.I.T. than any other office in town.

If you feel you do not receive your share of S.H.I.T. on the job, please see your supervisor. You will be placed at the top of the S.H.I.T. list for special attention.
All of our supervisors are particularly qualified to see that you get all the S.H.I.T. you can handle at your own speed.

If you think that you have a thorough understanding of the basic S.H.I.T. program, you may wish to participate in Management Of Related Education (M.O.R.E. S.H.I.T.).

If you consider yourself to be trained enough already, you may be interested in helping us train others. We can add you to our Basic Understanding Lecture List (B.U.L.L. S.H.I.T.).

Some of you already display aptitudes that would easily allow you to enter the Director of Intensity Program (D.I.P. S.H.I.T.). Those who do not qualify for this position but are still interested will certainly be referred to the Director Under Management Bureau (D.U.M.B. S.H.I.T.). Those individuals who do not meet the requirements of The Bureau must first complete Special Training Under Personal Individual Discretion, Special High Intensity Training (S.T.U.P.I.D. S.H.I.T.).
If you have any further questions, please address them to our Head Of Training, Special High Intensity Training (H.O.T. S.H.I.T.) program.

Thank You.

When I'm at a dog show and we all go to dinner we usually discuss the days events...drawing horrified/disgusted looks from the tables next to us because in the breed ring its dogs and bitches. In that context 'bitch' is not a curse word...unless we're talking about the bitch that bitch of a judge put up.. :D .

That is a great point and is largely what I am talking about. That said, not to be crude, but no other way to do it: when a female dog is mating with a male dog, does that make her a "fucking bitch?"

K68 refer to our new dog as a bastard bitch. She's a bastard as K68 and I aren't married, thus bastard bitch is completely appropriate and not cussing or a judgment of our little girl.

Cursing never bothered me. Nudity doesn't bother me. Violence does. I never understood why our society is more uptight about exposing young ones to cursing and nudity than it is about violence.

My husband called one of our dogs a 'son of a bitch'. I advised him that was a statement of fact not an insult. He threw something at me. (the husband, not the dog :D )

LOL! That inspires another post as well (coming). It would be cool if we could get a list of items that have been thrown at you out of violent intent, especially by loved ones during an argument. That could get interesting. :-?

My teacher got mad at someone in our class today for saying gosh dammit.

Then we had a 15 minute long conversation about cursing in front of adults and parents...

I made the same point on the local news when I was in high school. People called my parents and my threats to my personal safety.

I was interviewed by a reporter and asked if I was offended that there was an adult bookstore across the street from the high school. Apparently there had been an uproar recently and a lot of parents were complaining and trying to have the business shut down. I told the reporter that I didn't think it was a big deal because you had to be 18 to enter and that most of the parents that were causing the uproar were hypocrites because they were the same parents that bought their underage children R-rated movie tickets. I threw in something like I find it disturbing that parents would rather endorse their children's interest in violence and murder than a natural act like sex.

Took about 10 minutes before the phone started ringing off the hook.
