Maybe Billy Crystal is the perfect example of the man that many women SAY they want, a guy who can make them laugh? MANY women claim that that is one of the most important things to them. Apparently, MANY women lie. ;) And I had "Meet the Parents". "Meet the Faulkers" wasn't really a ROMANTIC comedy, and it was pretty bad, though I will admit it had a few funny parts. Some might say that some other Ben Stiller movies are non-chick flick romantic comedies, but I disagree.cl15876 wrote:You have a pretty good list, but understand "the Lake House" was NOT a "rom com" (sorry CB&B), but just thought I'd provide an assist in the chick flick area for ya, as it is good for us to explore our other sides on occasion IMHO!!!! Just like Bacon is good for the soul and the taste buds and my tummy!!!! ;) BTW, I have to agree with BD, Billy may it do it for some, but I think it's safe to say, not MOST (irrespective of $$$, that would make them a BC-W!!!!bjornolf wrote:Ouch, that was TOTALLY a chick flick. .... The Lake House is NOT a romantic comedy, and it wasn't that great a movie.cl15876 wrote:My goodness, bjornolf, no Sandra Bullock movies? I thought "The Lake House" was awesome!
How about the Faulkers??? Now there is a ROM-COM or a COM-ROM!!!!

Re: LTE 2.0
Movies I cannot stand:
1) Nearly all Sandra Bullock movies (well, I can stand Speed)
2) ALL Colin Firth movies.
3) Most Hugh Grant movies (save for 4W&AF, which had some good writing, but also had Rowan Atkinson).
4) Tom Hanks's voyages into rom-coms (SISeattle, YGMail, Splash).
5) ALL Jennifer Garner movies.
6) Anything with Julia Roberts... well, except maybe Erin Brockovitch.
7) Especially that post-Pretty Woman movie with Gere and Roberts, whatever it was called.
8) The Governator's Kindergarten Cop.
9) If it has "Mia" in the title.
10) If it also has "Mamma" in the title.
11) Billy Crystal made some UGLY movies: WHMS, Forget Paris, My Giant, etc...
And there are SO many more.
Was Jerry Maguire a men's rom-com? If so, I liked that movie. Same with Bull Durham!

I have a theory on the sense of humor thing. A guy can be extremely attractive but if he doesn't laugh at the same things you laugh at? Well, it starts going downhill quickly. It's not just having a sense of humor, it's having a similar sense of humor. And that means laughing together which is why stand-up comedians might not be doing so well with the ladies off stage. Comedy is their job and they might be competitive about it in their daily lives.

Wow, I've never thought of it like this, but I think you're exactly right, BD. My bf in college caught my attention because in our group of friends, he and I would both be the first to snicker at any line that could be alternately interpreted as bawdy or lewd. We both had "dirty minds," if you will. Same goes now with Mr. DA. I'd classify our senses of humor as witty/sarcastic, with a healthy appreciation for the silly and absurd. It was love at first laugh.Bostondevil wrote:I have a theory on the sense of humor thing. A guy can be extremely attractive but if he doesn't laugh at the same things you laugh at? Tonight I loaded up the puppies in their fancy duds, put on a short skirt and my FMPs and went to dinner with physicists. Yes, you read that right. Norman Ramsey and Wolfgang Ketterle among them. You can Google.

Dude, the end of The Dirty Dozen is fucking sad.bjornolf wrote:There's actually a LOT in SIS that I've found I relate to as a guy in Tom Hanks' part, not least of which is the scene where the guys make fun of "An Affair to Remember" by crying over "The Dirty Dozen".
The Princess Bride is among the greatest films ever. It both qualifies for numerous categories and defies categorization altogether.bjornolf wrote:One of my ALL-TIME favorite movies is labeled by some a romantic comedy, "The Princess Bride".
If you look at my Facebook interests, you'll see that they include fencing, fighting, torture, revenge, giants, monsters, chases, escapes, true love, and miracles. And no, I didn't have to look that up.

Well, scientifically, you have an hypothesis there, not a theory. ;). Then again, Anne Elk had a THEORY about the brontosaurus, right?Bostondevil wrote:I have a theory on the sense of humor thing. ILJ and I are drastically different in our senses of humor, most of the time. It's sort of like our tastes in bagels: garlic vs. Blueberry. We're 21 years into this marriage thing.
Of course, I'd suggest a great read from a Duke cultural anthropologist, but to do so would be self-righteous. So I won't.
