Ycch, Beer!
I'm hoping this is just a bad bottle I got, maybe RockyMt can enlighten me. I've opened a bottle of Tommyknockers Pick Axe Pale Ale, and all started well. It poured good, with evident amount of body. It smelled good, nice and hoppy. The color was good, but it did come out of the bottle cloudy, which I'm taking as a hint that something ain't right. Anyways, after tasting it, I am instantly hit with the impression of pond sludge. This beer is not "Ycch" bad, it is "Ewww" bad. It has to be contaminated. If it's not, then I can't imagine how they actually sell this. The bottle says "Tommyknockers slipped into the mining camps in the 1800's with the discovery of gold in the West". Apparently they brewed and bottled what I'm drinking back then too. I'd flush it, but I don't want cause problems for my toilet. BLEAH!!!!!!!!!!

Thank god it wasn't the Old Dominion I shared! I definitely would never want to leave a bad taste in anyone's mouth.....CameronBornAndBred wrote:I'm hoping this is just a bad bottle I got, maybe RockyMt can enlighten me. The Old Dominions were great, I have to say one one of my favorite porters. I drank each while gardening, which is why no review, grubby fingers. One day I will honor it on Ymm, Beer.cl15876 wrote: Thank god it wasn't the Old Dominion I shared! I definitely would never want to leave a bad taste in anyone's mouth.....

I've had that beer, but it's been a while. Tommyknocker usually makes decent beers, so I'd guess it's a bad bottle. If I see a single of it in the next week or so I'll pick it up and see.

Re: Ycch, Beer!
I bought a 12 pack sampler early this year and had the same impression. It was outdated by several months and a couple of them were OK but that is a disturbing review as I have had several over the years during ski trips and generally found them to be good beers.CameronBornAndBred wrote:I'm hoping this is just a bad bottle I got, maybe RockyMt can enlighten me. Michelob Ultra Tuscan Orange Grapefruit-ditto
Ditto.
Now, an explanation. They were a gift from a patient (actually her spouse) who had previously brought me a nice assortment of NB, New Glarus and Schlalfly products from 2 different RV journeys. No one drank them after a reception at our house after my Dad's funeral and I figured, what the hey and sampled them. Never again. I did wash the awful taste outta my mouth with a couple other fine ales AND took a shower afterward so I feel cleaner now. I think I'd rather have a bud lite. Nah, I think I'd rather have a Diet Coke   .

Re: Ycch, Beer!
It's never good to revive this thread, but some beers are deserving. I really consider a brew to be deserving to be called out in here when it is presented as a good brew.
Some you would think might show up...Shock Top, Budweiser Ale, a few other big brew attempts at craft. But those aren't all that bad, you know what you are getting when you buy them.
Pyramid's Haywire Hefeweizen however, is TOTALLy deserving of the Ycch thread.
I'm expecting a nice hefe, and I get an overall flat brew that honestly tastes like a Bud that got left on the table overnight after a kegger. I've had Pyramid's before for the novelty, they have the apricot and some other flavor beer, and they weren't bad...just gimicky. You would figure with a gimmick free straight up hefeweizen the taste would be ok. Hell no, it sucks. I hoped it was just a bad bottle, so I tried number two. It tastes like number two. Very sad.

Re: Ycch, Beer!
I have had several of the Tommyknockers in the past whilst skiing in Colorado and liked the beers. I bought a 12 pack sampler at the coast this spring and thought they all were spoiled and, after checking the dates, realized they were all several months out of date. You may want to do that with your assortment, and, if they are all outdated, return them to your beer shop and ask for a refund. Disappointing. Hope that helps.CameronBornAndBred wrote:I'm hoping this is just a bad bottle I got, maybe RockyMt can enlighten me. I've opened a bottle of Tommyknockers Pick Axe Pale Ale, and all started well. Re: Ycch, Beer!
In defense of Pyramid, when we visited the brewpub last year across the street from Safeco Field in Seattle, I had the sampler and thought they were all good, but not outstanding session beers. See my prior post. You may wish to check the bottling or "sell by" dates and return the swill if it is outdated. If it's just bad beer, well, I am sorry you're screwed.CameronBornAndBred wrote:It's never good to revive this thread, but some beers are deserving. And that's AFTER I thought I clicked on the "first unread post" choice. I must still be dazed from the 1760 LTE post barrage from earlier this week.
