Re: LTE 2.0
Wow, what a great question. I feel the same way about going to Duke, but for me, I'll say my best decision was deciding to chase after Mrs. Turk. Definitely "outkicked my coverage" as they say, and I would be a tad nervous if she was asked where I might rank me on her decision-making hierarchy...DukeUsul wrote:I have a one day seminar for my MBA program tomorrow on individual decision making. As an assignment, I have to write a couple pages on the best and worst decisions I've ever made and be prepared to talk about them for a couple minutes in class.
Ugh! Tell me how easy it would be for you to even come up with your best and worst decisions. And they have to be ones you are willing to bring up in class! My first thought on best decision was going to Duke. But this is an NC State MBA class and I don't want to be that snobby, elitist Duke alum prick. I've been thinking about it all day. It took forever, but I think I'm going with deciding (almost on a whim at first) to pick up a minor in computer science in addition to my physics major. It's set up what turned out to be a pretty good career for me.
Now for my worst decision. Ugh!
DU, might want to tread lightly, my friend. Hate to see what could happen to your domestic tranquility if Mrs. Usul finds out she doesn't make the cut....
Worst decision? Hmm... where to begin, where to begin? Let's give that some thought and save that for a separate post...

Re: LTE 2.0
My worst decision? Easy. Putting my daughter's 3rd and 4th year college money into the high-flying Janus funds. In April 2000, the very height of the tech bull market. After all, if the market went down a bit, she didn't need that money for 2 more years... Thank goodness she got some scholarships to make up for what was lost, and to this day, has not recovered. If I had kept the money in the more conservative funds they had been in, today she'd have enough for a down payment on a house instead of for a compact car.
I don't even want to think about the IRA money I transferred into even "techier" funds that all but disappeared.

Bostondevil wrote:colchar, how come you didn't mention that the Scottish flag is the oldest national flag in the world? It is. I'm a little sketchy on the details but somebody, (Robert the Bruce?) looked into the sky before a battle with the English and saw the clouds forming the Cross of St. Andrew. So the Scots put the Cross of St. Andrew on a blue blackground and carried it into battle. Or something like that.
It wasn't The Bruce - it was (supposedly) King Angus who was leading the Picts and Scots into battle. Apparently St. Andrew, who had been martyred on a saltire cross, appeared to him the night before the battle after Angus had prayed for deliverance as he and his men were surrounded. The next morning a white saltire is supposed to have appeared in the blue sky. This is said to have taken place in 832 A.D. The next major mention of it occurred in sometime in the twelfth century (in reference to the aforementioned battle). Eventually, after being included on the seal of St. Andrews, it was decreed by the Scottish parliament that all Scots soldiers must wear it into battle. Originally, the flag had a red background (at least the earliest surviving one was red) but at some point it was changed to blue (probably as a result of the legend becoming more well known) and remains so that way to this day.

Re: LTE 2.0
OK, worst decision is that my career has drifted into a managerial role that doesn't fit my strengths. The job is lucrative and I'm acceptably competent at it, but I'm not all that happy. My work situation is by no means toxic, unlike others in our CTN family, so I don't mean to be a crybaby. So I guess my worst decision is choosing not to decide on a career path and just keep on cashing paychecks over the past eight or nine years. The better choice would have been to "decide what I want to be when I grow up" and setting specific milestones to reach that goal.

Is it wrong that I am home on a Friday night working on my dissertation as opposed to being in a bar drinking?
Is it wrong that I am currently listening to Meatloaf?

Said a little prayer for you as I imagine you are taking the test as I write. Vibes and continued prayers.CellR wrote:Oh, and wish me luck on the ACT tomorrow -- for the second time. I have taken WAY too many standardized tests. 1 (about to be 2) ACT's, 2 Subject Tests (U.S. History and Math II), and like 5, or maybe 6 SAT's in my life, counting the 7th grade Duke TIP one. Oh, and two AP tests that I forgot about (English + Composition, APUSH), although I will take three more this year.
This is my last college placement standardized test, finally. I haven't studied at all, so I'm a little worried about the math, but I did well on the math last time and I'm pretty sure colleges take the highest score in a section from any of your tests. Luckily.

I DVR'ed 'Wacky Races' on Boomerang, and am having an old-fashioned Saturday morning cartoon and cereal session. I could even finish this thing off with a serving of 'American Gladiators' in the old style if I wanted to.
I even have the Blue Devils on the gridiron at noon.
Strong possibility of an entire day in front of the television.
