I was a bit surprised about having to put that on an application too. You haven't been convicted, only charged, so technically you are still innocent. That makes little sense to me. Good luck!

Up here, no university could ever as about criminal convictions on an application.

Well, after talking to one of my friends (who was there) dad, a lawyer, gave me the impression that I will have to put it on my applications. Duke's "Who We Want" section says We want some bumps. I know it's probably better not to have too many bumps, or this kind of bump, but at least they are open to people who make mistakes and learn from them.

I've had the suggestion that I should get 4 to 5 people (coaches, principal, etc.) write me character references and bring them to my court date. The person said that it might help, if the judge decides to look at them.

I think you're better off including it, because: 1) Leaving it off might be viewed badly if the schools happen to find out about the incident. Honesty is always the best policy. 2) If they turn you down for something like this, chances are it's not a place where you'd be very happy. Trust me on this one. I know of schools that have such a strict policy against alcohol that you can be expelled if you're caught with alcohol anywhere off-campus - even if you're in a different town.

Obviously follow the path suggested by your counsel. I'll simply add that you are probably under an obligation to supplement your application with any new information, including whatever may arise from this situation. Because of that, even if you were to be able to bypass the question now, there is a possibility that it has to go on the application at some point.

But, keep in mind when the applications are due. You may have a bit of time before the deadlines and, if so, it may well be worth it to allow the legal process to work itself out. At that point, you may be able to genuinely answer the question with a "no". At the very least, you'll have a better understanding of where you stand.

I was planning on waiting until the last week to submit my applications for this very reason. I feel like it would be much better to be able to provide the whole story, as well as the after-affects at the same time. Hopefully I can genuinely answer with a "no", but probably not...
