I'll take Nessman and Venus in the question. Herb was too annoying. Fever was a great character, I could have gone with either of those two choices. Mr.Carlson was good, the wishy-washy guy who hated making decisions. (Although he'll always be The Maytag Repairman). Who was the other male character with the cheesy hair? Never seen or heard from again. Good 'ol whatshisface.
Cheers was on the bubble for me and cratered during the Kirstie Allie years; I had to give the edge to Frasier...

Nessman of course; Venus and Fever are a tossup.

Here's the biggest omission: what abou The Office? OMG, how could I forget that? If it has staying power for a few more years, I might add that in and boot Raymond...

You mean Andy Travis, the program director?

I think Friends is a good deal funnier than most people give it credit for.
And come on, are you gonna tell me that she's the only one worth watching among that cast? :-o #-o
There are a couple of others from that show that I'll watch any time, with or without sound. ;)
Touche. Alright, you got me there. Phoebe is the only one that's funny. I'll agree the others are quality eye candy...

Red Wigglers. And it is Herb who deserves credit for those!

As I've mentioned before, I went to high school with Kelsey Grammar. He was a year behind me. He was a backup tight end his junior year.

I didn't mean to imply that Andy Travis came up with the slogan. IIRC, Travis came up with the name Dr. Johnny Fever. He is also the one who came up with Apollo Fly Trap.

I can find references that cite it as either WRIGGLERS (on Wiki) or WIGGLERS.

I don't remember you mentioning that before. Then again, I'm half in the bag right now so what do I know? Either way, that is tremendously cool - he's a great actor who has survived more tragedy than anyone deserves.

He came up with Venus' name but actually called him Apollo Rising. When Venus went on the air he came up with Venus Flytrap on the spot.

As for Johnny's name - Andy came into the booth, handed him some records, and told him to go ahead and change the format right there and then. Johnny asked if Andy had met Momma Carlson and, when Andy stated that he had, Johnny replied that he (Andy) was gonna love it in Amarillo (Johnny had been stuck there for a little while) because Momma Carlson would fire him for this. As Johnny went about changing the format he looked at his coffee cup (which listed all of the names he had previously used on the air) and called himself "Johnny [this is where he looked at the coffee cup]....Dr. Johnny Fever." At that point Andy walked back into the booth and said "By the way, you can say 'booger'** if you want to." At that point Johnny went back on the air (music was playing at the time) and said "I almost forgot fellow babies - BOOGER!" and then sat down and started rocking out to the tune he was playing at the time.

**Booger being the word Johnny had said on-air in L.A. which had led to him being fired from that particular station.

Speaking of Pheobe, and maybe everybody already knows this, but without looking, what show was Friends a spinoff of?

Sorry, I just realized a mistake in the above post. When Andy originally came up with Venus' name it was Venus Rising, not Apollo.

The episode in which he comes up with Apollo Flytrap was the one in which he has a fight with Venus and takes over for him. And what song is the first one Apollo (Andy) plays? "I am Woman" by Helen Reddy.

Some of the music selections played on the show were hilarious. From the "booger" episode, there's a scene in which Johnny is playing "You're Having My Baby" sung by the Hallelujah Tabernacle Choir.

Lisa Kudrow played a waitress named Ursula Buffay, Pheobe's sister, in 23 episodes of the show "Mad About You". They liked her so much as an actress that when Friends was created, the producers used her as Ursula's "nice" opposite sister and used some of M.A.Y.'s popularity to build up the Friends audience. I think they even did a carry over episode or two. Ursula even shows up in a couple episodes of Friends, played by Kudrow. Some considered it a spinoff, others did not. I think it qualifies. It wasn't DESIGNED as a spinoff for Kudrow, but it was her work on M.A.Y. that got her the job, and they ended up keeping the same characters, even their names, and tried to use the popularity of the other show to help it along before it became popular itself. Some argue that when Friends struggled in the beginning, it was the M.A.Y. crowd that kept it going.

Okay, I read this also...and fell into the camp that it wasn't a spinoff as Ursula wasn't a title character in either show.
