What are your early thoughts about the hire, Bob?

Re: Welcome Coach Elko
The future of Duke Football starts today!
I'm happy the search is finally over, and I'm happy with the hire. I'm really looking forward to seeing who he brings on now to make up his staff, of course.
I wonder if Duke will actually have a real Spring game now instead of what it's become in the last few years. If so, I'd love to be there to watch.

Re: Welcome Coach Elko
Our team went downhill quickly after Jim Knowles departed so having a defensive minded head coach is good. Let’s see who he hires as coordinators. Priority one is bringing together a solid staff. Hopefully the $$ are there.

Seems like the money is there, I bet we hear about some facility upgrades soon too! One of the reports on him is that he is big on S&C, I wonder if we'll see a physical transformation similar to when Cut took over.
Oh, and Bob I think there is a game thread that needs started OY ;)

Re: Welcome Coach Elko
That's something that has always had me perplexed. When Cut came in, we improved SO much in that department. And then...poof.
He preached speed at his intro presser, and showed that it mattered. But in the last few years of his time in Durham, we were seemingly consistently outmatched on the field by other ACC teams that we really should have been keeping pace with, at least in the conditioning department.
I'm looking forward to Elko getting us back on that track.

For anyone that didn't see today's press conference, here is a link.
I was very impressed. Of course, just as Cut said on his Day One, Duke will be playing for Championships. Cut held true to that word once, so I'm optimistic that Elko can have us doing it again.

Re: Welcome Coach Elko
Late to the party but I've been keeping a close eye on the staff hires...
We just hired Derek Miller as our Recruiting Coordinator. Guy is young but already has experience at LSU and SoCal on their recruiting staffs. We took him from ECU for this position, which leads me to believe the budget for our assistant coaches is at a good place.
Sources say we are going to hire Memphis Offensive Coordinator Kevin Johns to be our OC. Memphis averaged over 30ppg this year and articles I've read says he has mainly worked with QB's and WR's in his time. He was also the OC for Kliff Kingsbury (current Arizona Cardinals HC) at Texas Tech. Also was OC at Indiana for three years.
Not going to question any of his defensive staff hires. Our defense will be his and any defensive hires he makes will be a reflection of his philosophy.
Offense will be interested as Elko has no offensive experience. He will rely heavily on Johns and the "to-be-named" offensive coaches to direct that side of the ball.
Overall EXTREMELY happy with this hire. To steal one of the hottest DC's in the country away from A&M, also a guy that's young, seems to me is a huge win. As Bob said, we have to spend good money filling out the 15-20 assistant coaches in order for the program to take a step.
Looking forward to 2022!!!

Re: Welcome Coach Elko
I’m pleased with the Kevin Johns hire. He is a proven coordinator. Not to rehash old drama but Johns is the type hire Coach Cutcliffe should have made when Montgomery headed to ECU.wolfpackdevil wrote: ↑January 4th, 2022, 1:46 pm
