I planted two more plants in pots this morning a second zucchini and a Sun Sugar yellow cherry tomato. My okra plants are starting to get some size to them. I have 46 with about half up over a foot tall so I’m optimistic when the July/August heat arrives I will have plenty of okra pods to harvest and eat.

You can keep all your okra but I'd gladly accept some zucchini and/or cherry tomatoes, or, any home grown tomatoes for that matter.

I will bring some home grown tomatoes to tailgate for you but it might be in 2021. No okra? Hmm, you must be from New Jersey.

Ha! Joy is from NC and she dislikes okra, too, but likes "greens," which I detest.

I'll most certainly take you up on the 2021 tomatoes, maybe trade you some NC beers in return ;) .

Garden update:

1. My tomato plants are looking rough. A second one has died. I’m getting tomatoes off the three remaining plants but the heat is taking a toll.

2. Zucchini and yellow squash still producing. I pulled one plant out that was done but have four remaining. A yellow squash in the ground, a yellow squash in a pot and two zucchini in pots. I succession planted the three in pots so each plant is a couple weeks younger than the others.

3. Okra and Asian Long beans are thriving — they both love the 99 degree heat.

Our tomatoes are the only thing in our garden producing. It’s been too dry for everything else. I’ll begin putting up tomatoes today. I’ll also make spaghetti sausages with them. I’ve done that in the past and loved the results.

I ripped out my okra this past week. I still have Asian long beans, eggplant and chili peppers growing.

It’s time to start gardening. I bought some starter plants yesterday so I will be putting some in containers today and some in the ground.

Standard selection: zucchini, yellow squash, Asian eggplant, chili peppers and tomatoes.

I bought them at Norfolk County Feed and Seed for $1.89 per tray of three compared to $3.98 per plant at Lowe’s. Huge savings by patronizing the local business.

Mostly I'm growing food for the butterflies this year, since we had so much fun with them last Summer. (Milkweed, parsley, fennel, dill) and lots of flowers to attract them. I do have three tomato varieties growing, though, as well as cucumbers and peppers. Everything started from seed back in January, and has been out of the greenhouse now since the beginning of April.

We’ve had cold temperatures the last two nights including a totally unexpected frost. I’ve lost some starter plants . Oh well, the trials and tribulations of backyard gardening.

Yum! My squash aren't there yet, but I've enjoyed a few cucumbers so far. Damn deer ate the tops of my pepper plants, so the ones that would have been ready now disappeared. Silver lining, my plants will be nice and bushy this year. (They have been moved to the safety of my fenced in garden now.)

Weather here has not been kind; we've been in a mild drought. I've got a rain barrel system both at home and for my office gardens, but just getting flat out rained on is always nice. Yesterday we got a couple inches finally, and today we are supposed to get more. Hopefully we enjoy rain every few days this summer instead of every few weeks.

My garden produced yellow squash and zucchini this week as a result of my hand pollination efforts last weekend. I’ll be back out there this morning paint brush in hand.

There are lots of flowers on my eggplants and a few on my peppers.
