I actually ran into her in Starbucks at the UM hospital on my interview day! Crazy, because we were Math 31L ( :ymsick: ) lab partners freshman year.

Just an update so you won't wonder if I decided to stay in Haiti forever: Barring wait list movement from Columbia or Albert Einstein, I'll be attending the Tufts MD/MPH program in Boston this coming fall! Despite the great weather of Miami, I think this option is better for both clinical care and global health opportunities.

Any tips on surviving in the arctic north?

Suggestions for surviving the arctic north? Look at pictures of it while in Miami! B-) Seriously. Miami is a good school.

Such heady and exciting times for you guys! Your CTN family is so happy for you and proud of you.

Native has accepted a great job in the Big Apple and thinks he'll even be able to afford a small pad near MSG so he can get to Duke games in "OUR HOUSE NORTH"! So you should't hesitate to request lodging should you find yourself with tix next year.

It's a big, wide world out there and it hasn't seen the likes of you yet!!! Go out and change it for the better!

You are going to med school - I'm not sure you will have any time to be outdoors to truly experience the arctic north. :D

Congratulations!

Huge congrats. Boston may have had a record total snowfall this winter. In addition to your stethoscope, you're going to need a snow shovel. Maybe two.

Excellent! So happy for you! Cold survival- dress in layers, get a good hat that covers your ears, scarves are very helpful as well as snow boots that are easy slip on and off. Make sure you have a strong ice scraper with a snow brush on the handle for your car. Don't worry, your blood will thicken by February :)

Tips on how to survive the artic north.

1) Buy a warmer winter coat than the one you currently own.
2) If that coat doesn't have a good hood, get a good hat.
3) Next buy gloves and a scarf. By more than one pair of gloves including at least one truly waterproof pair.
4) If you think you'd rather have mittens, get a pair of those too. You should probably compare gloves and mittens before committing. People tend to prefer one or the other. (I prefer gloves.)
5) Next buy waterproof boots.
6) Learn to layer.

Now, other practical advice about Boston. There is not much in the way of housing right by New England Medical Center/Tufts Med School. Many areas of town that used to be kinda dicey are much better BUT avoid the appropriately named "student ghetto" along the Fenway (the area between Park Drive and Fenway Park, trust me, it looks nice but it's not worth it to live there.) Living just the other side of the Fens near Northeastern is a better choice (but don't go south of Huntington Ave unless you're within a block of Northeastern). Other neighborhoods to consider Allston (loud and full of students but also nightlife), Brighton (less loud, more families, still a bunch of young people oriented bars/restaurants), South End (probably too expensive, not so many students anymore, artsy, as long as you are East of Mass Ave - do not live West of Mass Ave in the South End), Roxbury is not completely out of the question but I wouldn't recommend it. JP (Jamaica Plain) kind of like Brighton but funkier - on the rise and getting more expensive. The Back Bay and Beacon Hill don't want students and are priced accordingly. Or - do what thousands of other Boston area students do - live in Somerville.

Finally - congrats - Tufts is an awesome medical school! :happy-bouncyblue:
Look me up. When Scienceguy is home on break, we'll take you out to dinner. :)

Hey y'all! It's been what feels like only a few months, but for some reason the calendar says it's been five years. I hope that you are all doing well!

Just a quick update - I graduate from medical school in a few months! I took an additional research year last year, and The Match is coming up in March. I'm applying into otolaryngology-head and neck surgery (Ear, Nose, and Throat), and Duke is once again my #1 choice. Cross your fingers and send some good vibes! Hoping to spend the next 5-7 years in Durham.

Wonderful to read. Deep and wide congratulations. Two of our children went to medical school and are finishing their residencies this year. Now, one of our "internet" children is graduating. Life is grand. Best of luck!
