Which mulch do you prefer?
Home Depot loves me, even though I have no idea what I'm doing. I have bought and spread like eleventy million bags of mulch this spring. What does everyone else use?

Re: Which mulch do you prefer?
I had 5 yards of natural hardwood mulch delivered to my place in late March. This mulch was to cover a new 675 sq. ft. planting bed I made in my backyard to reduce water usage. The natural hardwood is the least expensive mulch here in SA, it was $14 a yard. All in with delivery and tax it was about $140. They want $50 a yard for the colored mulch. I use the black colored mulch in my planters out front, I figure if someone can see it, I'll spend the extra(plus I only need about a yard and a half).

Cyrpess works best in Florida. I have spread a few bazillion bags of the stuff

We, well the garden fairy, spreads a whole dump truck full of hardwood mulch in our gardens. We have a LOT of garden space tho! Love it! Keep the weeds away!

We use pine straw here on the coast. It's the most affordable and easy to spread. I told Stevo we are never, ever going to use that weird red stuff. It looks like coal mine vomit to me.

We use wood chips for the shubs. I like pine straw for the flowers. For the vegetable garden, which is big, we like compost with shredded newspaper over that. It's not pretty but our garden is so large, it's economical.

I used cypress this year. The bag said it won't float away, plus it was the cheapest. So far so good. The weeds are kept to a minimum and it really does stay put. That's saying something in the amounts of rain we've had this Spring!

It won't float away - we get crazy downpours here in the summer almost every afternoon and the cypress stays put. It is all we use (using hardwood in Florida is like putting out a termite buffet)

The OP uses his own compost or else wood chips. I don't do yard work, myself. We already argue about how too many things should be done. I let the OP have his way out there. So he doesn't do laundry, iron, cook, do the bill paying and book keeping, keep track of birthdays and anniversaries with cards or gifts, or do any correspondence and I don't work in the yard.

PS He does grill, if I've prepared everything and hand it to him complete with instructions and a clean plate to bring it in on. And when we entertain, he comes to the party, bless his heart.
