In my brain, which I have already proven is on a different wavelength, I prounounce your name Duke-you-sul(like hull). Make sense? Am I close?
No, it's actually ooo-sul.

The name is taken from a character in Frank Herbert's Dune. If you want to hear it pronounced, here's a clip from the very horrible David Lynch (1984) film adaptation. The bearded guy says Usul when Kyle MacLachlan walks up to him (about 0:39) and then again later around 3:00.

Now I get it. I've never seen Dune, may have to now.

I thought I was the only one that made that joke. He played for the Texas Rangers during my time in Dallas.
I'd bet it was originally a Chris Berman-ism.

Well everyone in Dixie is wrong then. Considering the fact that the name is Scottish, I'm pretty sure we know how to pronounce it. Damned Yankees can't ever speak proper English can they ;)

I have to side with you for 2 reasons. First, and most importantly, it is your name and you know how it should be pronounced. Second, that is the most common way I have heard it pronounced.

Pronounce looks funny as a word to me. Especially when you look at its counterpart - pronunciation.

Discuss.

Hey colchar, before you get all in a huff, remember North Carolina has Cape Fear and Albemarle Sound. There's a reason for that. (Mother's maiden name - Galloway)

Its far older association is with regard to Islamic law. The term usul ul fiqh refers to the fundamentals or origins of Islamic law (where "usul" refers to fundamentals and "fiqh" is law). I doubled in religion and history at Duke, and my undergrad advisor is a fairly renowned scholar of Islam, so this is what I always think of when I read your handle. :-B
Does the notion of fundamentals or origins have anything to do with the Dune character (I've never read the book or seen the film)?

I think I'll be pretty incommunicado for the weekend. I'm staying at Mom's tonight, and there's no wireless. Not sure about the hotel where we're staying for the wedding. Back on the boards Sunday night, though, and more research updates beginning next Wednesday.

I saw a 3-4 page list of them a couple years ago. Freakin' hilarious.

I wish your area of study's time frame were just a bit later than the one you selected. A story might could be verified, concerning an ancestor of mine. Time for dinner now,(past time, truthfully) or I'd relate.
