Wrapped up like a douche

Post by OZZIE4DUKE » July 12th, 2013, 4:20 pm

Most of you have probably already seen this discussed on the news today (NBC discussed it on the Today Show this morning), but here are the 10 most misquoted songs according to Spotify!
http://www.cnn.com/2013/07/11/tech/web/ ... index.html

I'm guilty of the title booboo and Jimmy Hendrix' Purple Haze fau pax. Some of the others, I've never heard, but I do know, without a doubt, that there's a bathroom on the right! I've used it a time or two! B-) :D :9f:

Raise your hand if you have never sang, "wrapped up like a douche." That's what I thought...no one raising their hand. We've all made that mistake.

Read the comments - they are even better than the mangled lyrics in the article.

I haven't. I'm a huge Bruce fan and I know his lyrics pretty well. I have however wondered about "the girl with colitis goes by." :ymblushing:

When my ten year old son was six, he sang jingle bells as a "one whore soap and sleigh."

Since we are watching the Jimmy Buffett DVD, this is probably a good time to mention that both Rev. Lawgrad and Stepdau both argued with me that Jimmy Buffett stepped on a Pop-Tart in "Margaritaville." Neither could figure out why he had to go home after that. :9f:

That lyric is one of the best ever written. I recall having to explain what a "pop top" was to my Sam.

My cousins and I used to make pop top chains from our soft drink cans when we vacationed at the beach as kids. It didn't take much to keep us entertained. ;)

Last time I went to karaoke, I sang "Bad Moon Rising" and just for fun at the end of the song, pointed the way to the ladies room as I sang "There's a bathroom on the right." Totally guilty of making that mistake for YEARS!!!! As in I was shocked to discover the name of the song.

I'm not talking about the linen either.

I never sang "wrapped up like a douche" but I did think it was "wrecked up like a deuce" so, not quite right.

Finally, I wrote a play with the title "Round John Virgin".
The time is out of joint, O cursed spite!

I laughed when the Passat commercial showed people slaughtering Rocket Man "burning out his fuse up here alone". I will admit to having NO idea what that lyric was for along time...so I did the mumble thing whenever I sang it.

When Sam was little, he mis-sang the lyrics to Hootie and the Blowfish's song, "Hold My Hand:" "I'm gonna love you, the bear said, the bear said I can." The actual lyric is, "I'm gonna love you, the best that, the best that I can."

My next-door neighbor in the office was Gus Gusler, the attorney for Hootie and the Blowfish. I told Gus how Sam mis-sang the lyrics. First, he couldn't believe that the kids in daycare listened to Hootie. Then, he laughed and said, "I'm going to tell Darius that he needs to work on his diction."

Here ya go-an "explanation" of the lyrics for "Blinded by the Light."

http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index ... 159AAT3Hmz

Note especially the following paragraphs:

"The chorus of the song features the commonly misunderstood lyric, "Blinded by the light, cut loose like a deuce, another runner in the night." ("Deuce" refers to a '32 Ford Deuce Coupe.) Many listeners hear the word "douche" in place of "deuce." Manfred Mann's Earth Band changed this line slightly to "revved up like a deuce" (often misquoted as "wrapped up like a douche") and repeated it much more frequently in their version than Springsteen did in the original; they also omitted parts of the verses and rearranged the order of the remaining lyrics.

Springsteen, in his 2005 VH1 Storytellers appearance, lightheartedly made the assertion that the sole reason that Manfred Mann's version of the song went to number one is that the altered lyric is actually "revved up like a douche". Bruce said, "The original lyric is 'cut loose like a deuce' referring to a two seat hot-rod, a little deuce coupe. Manfred Mann changed the lyric to 'revved up like a douche', which is a feminine hygienic procedure.... so, they're different." It should be noted, however, that Manfred Mann's website lists the lyric as "deuce" rather than "douche". It was once rumored that Chris Thompson's New Zealand accent may be responsible for swapping deuce for douche; however, this cannot be correct as "deuce" said with a New Zealand accent is pronounced something similar to "juice". A video of a 1976 Manfred Mann performance seems to support the "altered lyric" position. While "deuce" and "douche" would be pronounced in much the same way, in the video, the singer clearly seems to be singing "wrapped" - rather than "revved" - consistent with the "douche" lyrics listeners have heard."

I think a linguist's perspective might be very useful for this thread. If only we knew of a linguist! Hmm... if only!! :-?

When my grandboys were little their mother got so tickled she nearly ran off the road when she heard the little guys buckled up and bouncing in the back seat singing the refrain from "Stayin' Alive" as "Ah ha ha ha, thing-a-ma-bob, thing-a-ma-bob!"

And we still tease the OP about the time years ago when he was singing "Up A Lazy River" to himself while working. I heard him sing "Linger in the shade of a condo tree!" Funny thing is that was long before the word condo was ever invented. I wonder what he thought a "condo" tree looked like. Bless his heart.
