Vibes to William Friday

They can go to hell in sports, but William Friday did a lot to advance UNC and the state's education system on the whole.

Uh-oh. This is not good. His niece, Sarah, is one of my friends. She is so close to her Uncle Bill. Oh no.

Thanks for letting us know, CB&B.

Here's my favorite Bill Friday story:

Back in late 1993, President Clinton was invited to speak at some huge thing in Kenan Stadium at UNC. I believe it was the Bicentennial of the university. I was there because I wanted to see Bill Clinton. There was at least a half-hour of pomp and ceremony leading up to his speech. Someone got up to the podium and welcomed everyone on behalf of everyone on campus, in Chapel Hill, in Orange County and in North Carolina. Then someone got up to the podium and introduced the introducer, along with a laundry list of the introducer's accomplishments. Then the introducer got up to the podium and introduced Professor So-and-So, along with a laundry list of Professor So-and-So's accomplishments. Then Professor So-and-So got up to the podium and introduced Bill Friday, along with a laundry list of Bill Friday's accomplishments. These people were all so full of themselves and you-know-what.

Finally, Bill Friday came to the podium. "Ladies and gentlemen, the President of the United States." The place erupted in applause, but it wasn't because the sitting President was being introduced. It was because Bill Friday knew how to keep an introduction short and sweet and to the point.

I love that man.
