He deserved to be fired. He lied to his boss, and he hired his alleged mistress to a position on his staff. What a total dumbass.
My older sister is watching the whole thing live, and someone said on Twitter that Jeff Long (Arkansas AD) wanted to keep Petrino but they couldn't agree to terms. My guess based on some things I read earlier is a possible paycut and a loss of complete autonomy over the football program. Sorry, but if you're going to hire your alleged mistress to fill a position on your staff, you don't deserve complete autonomy over your program. Dumbass.
ESPN is also speculating that Bobby Petrino will never be able to coach in the college ranks again. I suspect someone will hire him simply because there's some program out there who's more desperate to win than to hire a coach with ethics. We can all come up with a long and distinguished list of coaches who have been hired for multiple jobs despite less than stellar track records regarding NCAA compliance. However, if the ESPN talking heads are correct, that makes Petrino an even bigger dumbass (assuming he really did refuse to negotiate with Long).
Interesting bit of trivia: reading comments on local news stations in Arkansas, women wanted to keep Petrino and men were saying that he should be fired. I thought the opposite would be true. The "Keep Petrino" camp's argument was that he's a good coach and his personal life is his own business. The "Fire Petrino" camp cited his lying to the boss. Put me squarely in the "Fire Petrino" camp.

Re: Bobby Petrino in a spot of trouble
Got to see part of the presser. The Arkansas athletic director, Jeff Long, has majorly gone up in my estimation. Think about it: Arkansas is in the Situational Ethics Conference. Can anyone else name another SEC school that would fire their football coach under similar circumstances? Vandy, maybe. Several other schools that shall remain nameless would likely ditch any athletic director that even hinted of firing a coach who has turned a program around in the manner that Petrino did for Arkansas.
I really think that my earlier speculation was correct. Someone asked Long to clarify an earlier comment in which he said he decided he couldn't retain Petrino during a conversation between the two of them this morning. He said it wasn't a single comment; it was the cumulative effect of multiple comments. He also said Petrino did not offer a single example of a punishment that he would accept. Yep, dude was so arrogant that he thought he could carry on an affair with the 25 yr old fiancee of a coaching colleague and then hire said mistress to be a member of his staff. Then, he thought he could lie about it all to his boss. What a maroon.

Butchy is being mentioned as a possible replacement for Bobby Petrino. Based upon the fact that Long fired Petrino for being a lying schmuck, I suspect that he would NOT be interested in hiring Butchy.devildeac wrote:I guess there's another future candidate for the Tennessee job in addition to Butchy .ArkieDukie wrote:Press conference is on right now; unfortunately I can't watch it.

Re: Bobby Petrino in a spot of trouble
Finally seeing reports with quotes from the Jeff Long presser. All I can say is, wow.

http://espn.go.com/ncf/conversations/_/ ... rino-coach
http://espn.go.com/college-football/sto ... by-petrino

The 51-year-old Petrino, a married father of four, had maintained an inappropriate relationship with 25-year-old Jessica Dorrell for a "significant" amount of time and at one point had given her $20,000, Long said. He would not disclose details of the payment, but said both parties confirmed the "gift."
Dorrell, a former Razorbacks volleyball player, worked for the Razorbacks Foundation before she was hired by Petrino on March 28. Long said she was one of three finalists out of 159 applicants and got the job after a time frame Long said was "shorter than our normal affirmative action hiring process."
Petrino never disclosed his conflict of interest in hiring Dorrell or the payment, Long said.
And he ignored multiple chances to simply come clean.
"He made the decision to mislead the public, (and it) adversely affected the university and the football program," Long said, choking up at one point as he discussed telling players that their coach was gone. There was a "pattern of misleading and manipulative behavior to deceive me."

A friend just posted this on Facebook. Maybe Petrino has learned something from this, albeit a little too late?
April 10, 2012 – 8:45 p.m.
COACH BOBBY PETRINO STATEMENT
I was informed in writing today at 5:45 p.m. that I was being terminated as head football coach at the University of Arkansas.
The simplest response I have is: I’m sorry. These two words seem very inadequate. But that is my heart. All I have been able to think about is the number of people I’ve let down by making selfish decisions. I’ve taken a lot of criticism in the past. Some deserved, some not deserved. This time, I have no one to blame but myself.
I chose to engage in an improper relationship. I also made several poor decisions following the end of that relationship and in the aftermath of the accident. I accept full responsibility for what has happened.
I’m sure you heard Jeff Long’s reasons for termination. There was a lot of information shared. Given the decision that has been made, this is not the place to debate Jeff’s view of what happened. In the end, I put him in the position of having to sort through my mistakes and that is my fault.
I have hurt my wife Becky and our four children. I’ve let down the University of Arkansas, my team, coaching staff and everyone associated with the Razorback football program. As a result of my personal mistakes, we will not get to finish our goal of building a championship program. I wish that I had been given the opportunity to meet with the players and staff prior to this evening’s press conference and hope that I will be given the opportunity to give my apologies and say my goodbyes in person. We have left the program in better shape than we found it and I want the Razorback Nation to know that it is my hope that the program achieves the success it deserves.
My sole focus at this point is trying to repair the damage I’ve done to my family. They did not ask for any of this and deserve better. I am committed to being a better husband, father and human being as a result of this and will work each and every day to prove that to my family, friends and others.
I love football. I love coaching. I of course hope I can find my way back to the profession I love. In the meantime, I will do everything I can to heal the wounds I have created.
I want to thank Chancellor Gearhart, Jeff Long, the Board of Trustees, the University administration, faculty, staff, students, alumni and fans for the opportunity to serve as the head football coach at the University of Arkansas for the past 4 years. I was not given an opportunity to continue in that position. I wish that had been the case, but that was not my decision. I wish nothing but the best for the Razorback football program, the University and the entire Razorback Nation.

Wonder if he left copies of this in his players' lockers, the way he did in Atlanta when he took off for Arkansas.

Okay, this is pretty funny. I hadn't really thought about it until reading this article, but the whole motorcycle wreck story doesn't make sense.

Wonder which position she used to get her position.According to the paper, documents showed that Dorrell was one of three finalists for the position, posted in late February. After the finalists interviewed with multiple athletics department staffers, including Petrino, the former coach requested Dorrell be hired, writing that she "had the best experience and ... would be the best fit for this position."
Dorrell reportedly listed four years of related experience on her resume while nine of the 159 candidates listed at least 10 years of experience.

I seriously think this was a resign-or-be-fired scenario. She signed the same document that Petrino did, the one that claimed no conflict of interest/undisclosed connections relating to the position. Poor wording, but I think you get the idea. In summary, she lied too, although not to the same extent that Petrino did.
